but he sounds like hes in pain

just had his 6 month shots yesterday...
gave him a dose of tylenol
and some diluted juice...

and hes sitting on my lap...lol.

he usually goes to bed no later than 8 or 9

Sounds like you're doing the right things to me.
I can remember people telling me not to hold them too much or you'll spoil them. Well, I did it anyway, they're only little once!

I rocked my daughter to sleep until she was in the second grade... It worked for both of us... we would watch tv together in the rocking chair....

The other day she told me that the day I quit rocking her to sleep [because it hurt my back and legs] was the worst day of her childhood....

She's a good kid... not too spoiled... listens better than most... and when she doen't feel well, I sit with her so she can hear my heatbeat... it helps....

I nursed mine in the rocking chair and usually we both fell asleep! Most times I let him cry a while because they need to learn how to get themselves to sleep, but I could usually tell if he wasn't feeling well and then gave him all the TLC he needed until he did fall asleep. When he was older we had our ritual of a bedtime story, lullabies on tape or mommy singing and sometimes rocking him on my lap or holding him and "swaying" to the music. Sometimes they are just too wound up to relax. You would be surprised how manipulative they can be though, even at a young age.

I used to rock my daughter to sleep...and it was hard putting her down. Then one night I was really ill, and my husband was not home, so I had to let her cry it out. From that night on, she slept on her own.

My son, he still goes to bed with a bottle and only cries if something is wrong.

It also helps when baby #2 comes along, you just can't accomodate everyones needs - so they all seem to adjust.

I've never let my children CIO. I'm with the crowd that says, "they're only young once". Once they are communicative we've had no trouble at all tucking them in and telling them it's bedtime.
I also have a 6m/o and I love to rock her or nurse her to sleep. She's at that age when she looks up at me and might start to smile while still clamping down on me, but it's just too cute when she smiles.
Enjoy the time, Mom, and listen to your instincts that ache when your darling needs you.
