I'm doing some research on campgrounds in Maryland that are good for cub scout campouts. Can anyone recommend one that they have visited in the past? We are based out of Lusby, MD. Thanks.

We routinely used the semi-private campground area that is affiliated with St. Marys City for our troop campouts. Its just a bit south of St. Mary's City museum area proper and when you reserve it they open it up for you and its 'all yours'..no interference from any other campers...

A lot of open space and situated right on the banks of the river too. Plenty of room for 'projects'..we even built and 'fired' pumpkin trebuchets there one year.

Cub Scouts are only allowed to camp in approved locations. You can find a list on the National Capital Area Council's website or the Baltimore Area Council has also approved a number of locations in Calvert and the surrounding area.

There are certain criteria that must be met to be approved. If you find a location that is not on the approved list and you think it should be, or want it evaluated..... ask Huntr.....seriously....he's now in charge of getting campsites on that list, because we all know he's the Scout Geek extraordinaire.

See the file attached below. Cub Scout Packs in our area can ONLY camp at the locations on this list, unless the site they want to camp is on the Baltimore Area Council's list. If you have a place you want to camp, but it is not on this list, contact me and I will help you get it approved. The only exception to this is doing a lock in at a commercial place such as camping on the ships in Baltimore, at museums, on the field at a ball park, etc.

Wasn't Baybreeze on the list? What happened?

Or was it never on the list? I'm so confused.....

So which ones have you been too and what did you like about it. So far our pack has been to:

Point Lookout state park- The site was nothing more then a large rectangle shaped gravel pit, but it was on a paved loop that the boys enjoyed riding bikes on, bath house was close, and we were able to visit the lighthouse which the boys found pretty cool (there are cool Lighthouse patches sold inside).

Never been to Pt. Lookout. We were going to, but when we saw the lot, decided it was too small.

Usually go to Cedarville and it's very nice. I don't know how far you are looking to go, we have a lot of soccer & baseball players who don't want miss games, so we try to say nearby. Cedarville works for that, but it would probably be too far for you if you have the same problem. But they have fishing, hiking and an open field if you want to play games.

Been to Navy Rec Center. It's very nice, but not "real" camping. I mean, when you've got a pool, mini-golf and an arcade...seriously? Also it's expensive.

Been to King's Landing during the day. Seems nice enough. Camping is in a field, not in the woods like Cedarville. Not sure what amenities they offer because we were there for an event and didn't explore the park.

Smallwood, in Charles County would also be some distance for you. Fishing, hiking, camping is in the woods. They have a field for games and a couple of historic landmarks that you can get the ranger to show you. Biggest issue is the distance to the bathrooms. It is a quarter mile, instead of the 300ft max. required to get on the list. For this reason, they are probably going to be removed from the list soon....just as soon as Huntr gets around to it.

Nanjamoy Creek Environmental Center is also in Charles County, also some distance from you. I've been there during the day/evening. Seems like a nice place. Didn't see the camping area, although I saw the cabins, which could make it do-able in cooler weather. We went there to see their observatory. They also have a nature center.

Watkins Park in PG County is nice. They have a nature center, a farm, tennis, sports fields, hiking trail, mini-train tour. Our pack had poor turnout because of oh-my-god-its-PG-we're-all-gonna-die syndrome and then it poured rain, but I wouldn't mind going back there.

Cedarville is the best around for Cub Scout camping. $15.00 a night for the campsite if you have the youth group park pass.

Baltimore Area Council has approved the Mataponi (or whatever it's called) day camp area on base. If you have base access, that is a good location. The Order of the Arrow camps there for Ordeal and it's a nice place. Bathroom and water right there, pavillion for eating in, basketball court, pond for fishing, campfire ring.

Having Fun!
Son's troop went to Cedarville -- nice place. Went in April. Froze my azz off as my sleeping bag wasn't rated for the colder nights. Cursed out his Dad for making me go instead of him...:lmao:. We did have fun, though!
