You obviously don't know any teachers. My mom, sis-in-law, and girlfriend are teachers. And I can tell you they are underpaid. They spend their days dealing with kids that don't want to learn, and parents that don't care. Then after school, they grade papers and make lesson plans for what they are going to teach. They really do not have time for a second job...except during the summer. Of course, the "summer" for them is just June and July and many of them do get another job over the summer. If you don't think it's work, I think you should try it some time. Oh and by the way, many of them are required to get a Masters degree after X years so they are also taking classes in the evenings/weekends.

Now, I also don't think just throwing more money at schools is going to fix the education system. We have to get parents involved (by law if necessary). We also have to have standards for grade advancement/graduation. This is where my g/f and I disagree. She somehow thinks that standards are going to somehow restrict how teachers teach.

I am one of them, retired 2 weeks before my 39th birthday and now I have a second career. I was always sceptical about the "welfare" cases from the military that was always in the news. I was a division Chief of about 120 people for 2 years and yes, E1 to E4 do not make a bunch but they do pretty good considering. If you are an E2 with a wife and 3 kids of course you are going to be struggling. But you have a concrete chance at moving up to a better wage if you work hard. I know guys who went form E2 to E5 in just a couple years. When I was a division Chief most of the financial counceling I did was for people who overspend through immaturity. Kind of hard to justify sending someone to Navy Relief for financial help when you sit down with them and discover they spend $200 on CD's and Blockbuster rentals.
Part ofthe problem is the losening of the requirements onthe younger enlisted. When I came in if you were single and below E5 you lived inthe Q, no questions. You also had a chow pass, no questions. The only way you got out of the baracks and got comrats was to make E5 or get married and I even had E5's get turned down. Those standards got relaxed more and more each year and now you have E1's who get to move off base and get comrats with just a request. Not saying it is bad, but it has not helped a bunch.

SmallTown, I thought you were going to say that you've been having impure thoughts about Ann Coulter.

I have met a few people that were single, still enjoyed themselves, and invested over HALF of their pay EVERY month.. couple of them left the Army after just 10 years, financially independent. Others had goals in mind, such as, I want to own THIS business, this is the money I need to do it, and as soon as they reached that goal off they went to persue their dreams.

I could have retired 3 months after my 38th but I was on shore duty and stayed an extra year.

Is it just me, or doesn't it look like Ann Coulter has an adams apple?

Now Laura Ingraham...that's a cute republican. :flowers:

republicans are such cute little people. Their childlike innocence can be comical at times.

Over heard some people at work the other day talking about the allegations that Bush was involved with getting Aristede(sp!?) removed from power. One of the guys, a known hardcore Bush lover, starts going off talking about how we would never go to a country like that and remove a leader from power.

Wow. I'm sure Saddam is glad to hear that! :lmao: :lmao:
Involved? Send in Marines to boost security at our embassy. Reject a request from Aristede to provide him with troops to quell the rebellion/coup. Advised him that if he relinquished his office we would assist him into going into exile. In what way is that removing someone from power?

I you can see I made no judgement on the idea if we had had or had not gone in and took him out. I was only pointing out the stupidity of the person who said we never go in and remove people.

With all due respect, ST...

It's a refreshing trend, really.
There is simply nothing cute, adorable, or even likeable about the Dems!
