A D.C. Air National Guard fighter jet based at Andrews Air Force Base accidentally fired about two dozen rounds of ammunition during a nighttime training mission, piercing the roof of a school in southern New Jersey, authorities said yesterday. No one was injured in the incident, which is under military investigation.

Six of the projectiles, at least two inches long and a half-inch in diameter, were found inside Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School yesterday morning. Five were found in the parking lot, said Lt. John O'Brien of the Little Egg Harbor Township police.

Thank God this was at night....could have been a catastrophe....
Because no one was hurt or injured this is simply a blessing. How in the world would you miss your target by so far and why were his weapons armed over a populated area? I would hate to be the pilot doing the shooting as he has probably finished his career flying fighter aircraft.

What is the D.C. ARMY National Guard doing flying F-16's anyway? I thought the army gave up fighters when the Army Air Force was spun of into the Air Farce.

I saw this last night, and is it common for them to transport F-16's with live ammo?

Wasn't transporting but training heading to an authorized live fire range. I suspect that once the truth is known the gun trigger was malfunctioning and when the pilot armed the weapons that baby cut loose.

 The article says D.C, Air National Guard...based out of Andrews AFB. Where'd you get Army?

Another thought: "approximately two dozen rounds were fired...". That means that that M61A1 fired for about 1/4 of a second! I bet the pilot accidentally squeezed the trigger. If he went hot and then realized a fault was in play, I would think it would take longer than 1/4 second for him to react and shut it down.

Or maybe he voted Republican and decided to rain havoc on Lib Territory before coming to his senses!

On the news last night, they kept saying "D.C. Army Natl. Guard", and the guy they were interviewing, who appeared to be a person in the chain of command, was D.C. Army Natl. Guard, and said it was the Army N.G. too. But we ARE talking about D.C., so for all we know, it coulda been part of the D.C. Merchant Marine ROTC.
