Huntingtown Man Fires Shots at Cyclists on Charity Ride

On April 27, 2024, at approximately 10:10 a.m., deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Bureau responded to the 4600 block of Hardesty Road in Huntingtown, for the reports of shots fired.

Preliminary investigation revealed, that two cyclists participating in the charity ‘End Hunger’ Bike Ride were riding their bicycles on Hardesty Road when a pickup truck travelling behind them engaged in ‘road rage’. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as David Earl Bustin, 66 of Huntingtown, swerved around the victims in an attempt to run them off the road. The truck continued driving on Hardesty Road and pulled into a driveway where Bustin retrieved a shotgun and fired 3 shots toward the cyclists.

Contact was made with Bustin and he was placed into custody without further incident.

A residential search warrant was later executed where three spent shotgun shells and a Winchester Model 1300 shotgun were recovered.
Bustin was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center where he was charged with two counts of First-Degree Assault and two counts of Reckless Endangerment.

I can kinda see his point. Were the bicyclists taking up the whole dang road?
On weekends, it's horrible on those back roads dealing with the bicyclists. Lots of curves, no shoulders, guard rails within a few feet of the road. I have no issues with bikers but some think they own the road and getting past them can be a real pain sometimes. I wouldn't ride most of those back roads if I was a bicyclist. I've crested some of the small hills (doing the speed limit) only to find 2 or 3 bikers stopped in the middle of the road talking.

I'm surprised there aren't a large number of them run over, weekly, considering the routes they choose.

That's exactly my point.

Just sneakin' around....
...but some think they own the road...
This is especially true of those who play up the hard-core biker part with the top of the line expensive bike gear and skin-tight spandex. They push the limit of 'right of way', and can be very obnoxious. If they were being d*ckholes and preventing the truck from passing, can't blame the guy for getting short. But we'll never hear the real story.

If they want to hold these fund-raising events, why not use the bike trails? I thought thats why the county put them in. A whole lot safer since there is no automobile traffic allowed.
When reading comments on the socials about the Amish wreck yesterday, a woman flat out said that horse and buggies should not be allowed on the roads. THEY should find alternative ways to travel.

My thoughts on this are that the truck driver was speeding and not paying attention. Perhaps a medical incident?

Some people should learn how to drive. I dont have a problem with the Amish buggies, for the most part, they stay on the shoulder and out of the roadway unless unavoidable. Bicyclists however, seem to pick the worst roads in the county to ride on.
