Huh, you learn something new every day. Kinda reminds me of the time D came to my house once when we were first dating. We'd recently watched A Streetcar Named Desire (my favorite), and he commented that he passed a Dubois (he pronounced it the French way) Rd on the way to my house. I had to correct him and tell him that the locals pronounce it "Doo-boys". :roflmao:

And P.S. Mr. John Markwis needs an attitude adjustment. If I knew him I'd pronounce his name wrong on purpose.

:lmao: I thought it was funny that the guy in that link said his English teacher tried to correct him....for pronouncing his own name wrong.

There's a road in NC called Oine Road. Care to guess at its pronunciation?

One of my best friend's last name is Manganiello. Her family pronounces it pretty much exactly as it's spelled "Man-ga-nell-o". Our 8th grade English teacher spent the entire year telling her that her family pronounces the name wrong, it was supposed to be pronounced "Man-jia-nell-o". :lmao:

That's why I'm glad I don't have a weird name. My name is so common that you'd have to be brain-dead to mess it up.

My maiden name is very easy to pronounce, it's just long. People always mess it up, if they even make an attempt. :ohwell:

:yeahthat: I've never heard "Marquis" as and English-rooted word...only French.

My last name is 5 letters and they still mess it up 50% of the time. :duh:

My last name is common, but my first name is rare and gets mangled all the time. I'm used to it.

They are just spelled funny.
And that's the point...they are the furthest from the phonetic spelling and, therefore, the most difficult to pronounce (when trying to read the name...which is the topic).
