We'd recently watched A Streetcar Named Desire (my favorite), and he commented that he passed a Dubois (he pronounced it the French way) Rd on the way to my house. I had to correct him and tell him that the locals pronounce it "Doo-boys".

And P.S. Mr. John Markwis needs an attitude adjustment. If I knew him I'd pronounce his name wrong on purpose.

One of my best friend's last name is Manganiello. Her family pronounces it pretty much exactly as it's spelled "Man-ga-nell-o". Our 8th grade English teacher spent the entire year telling her that her family pronounces the name wrong, it was supposed to be pronounced "Man-jia-nell-o".

My maiden name is very easy to pronounce, it's just long. People always mess it up, if they even make an attempt.

I've never heard "Marquis" as and English-rooted word...only French.

And that's the point...they are the furthest from the phonetic spelling and, therefore, the most difficult to pronounce (when trying to read the name...which is the topic).
