Decision to make about kittens

We still have 4 kittens left that have not been vetted. If we get the bare minimum (spay/neuter and Rabies), we can get them done for about $70 each for the boys and $90 each for the girls. We usually also get deworming, Distemper vaccine and testing for FIV/FELV, which adds another $40 for each kitten. We do not have the money to get these 4 kittens vetted. We are still trying to pay back the $500+ we spent on the previous 5 kittens we had vetted. Only one of those kittens has been adopted, so we don't have enough of the adoption fees to reuse on this last batch of kittens. What do I do?

So do I adopt out the last 4 kittens w/o being vetted (not a good choice)? Or do I turn them over to Humane Society (if they will take them), or do I turn them in to a regular shelter? I just don't have the funding needed to match my level of rescue intensity. We have 3 female kitty adults, 8 kittens, and 4 dogs available right now. 2 of the 4 dogs need vetted.

This sounds like it's your answer. You don't have the money and you still owe over $500? This probably sounds cruel and crass, but why would you do that? You really cannot save all the starfish - especially at your own expense.

I just made a donation. Maybe, other forumites could help out, as well. Ark posted in another thread that she is doing a Yankee Candle fund raiser, too.

Let me see what I can do - won't be much but it'll be SOMETHING.

Arky,

I know what it is like to want to save everyone and everything. This is because we are fixers. The problem is we cannot fix everyone or every thing. I know it is a hard concept to follow but you have to make limits on what you can do and stick to them. What you are doing is a wonderful thing but now you are overwhelmed. I would have a farm of animals if I could but my landlord charges 500.00 each non refundable deposits for my cat and dog as well as an additional 100.00 for my daughters guinea pig and my sons 2" turtle.

My fiancé and I I recently broke up and I had to get a rental. I am lucky to have found one willing to take any pets at all. I had to send two of my cats with my oldest who lives in Baltimore, find a home for one more I took in for a friend 3 yrs ago, and the most painful was only being able to bring one of my three dogs. So I can totally relate.

I wish I could be in a financial position to help you or take some in but I have had to learn as hard as it is we have to learn our own limits and most importantly when to say , NO!!

:huggy: I have been in your position many years ago with children to raise, and relate to you, as well. There are always priorities, obviously. I wasn't able to give Ark a fortune by any means. We all do the best we can. You, me, Ark, and all on this forum. I am sorry you had to separate from your dear pets. I know that was hard.

At the time that the last 4 kittens came along, I figured we'd be re-using the adoption fees from the older kitten adoptions. So far that has not happened, and I don't want to wait too long, otherwise they lose their "kitten" charm you know? I have had multiple calls/emails about interest in the already vetted kittens, but few want to pay the $128 adoption fee, I just don't get it.

PS - thanks mamatutu - as you know every little bit helps. We are on the verge of getting our non-profit status (hopefully by December), so soon donations will be tax deductible and we will get permission to use a "donate" button from Paypal on our Lisa's Ark website to replace the one there now.

Unfortunately, all the rescues are overwhelmed with kittens right now. Some are spaying, neutering, testing, vaccinating, deworming, microchipping and then giving them away. Since you have had "multiple calls/emails" with possible homes, I would think you would jump at the chance to rehome them. At least they would have homes and you would no longer have to feed and care for them before they lose their kitten cuteness. Maybe you could consider giving them away, and use donations to vet the next batch of "free" kittens. Bottom line, they need homes.

that would be great.... but I DO THINK the issue is that THEY ARE NOT SPAYED OR NEUTERED.... and from what i have seen you cant trust someone to say they will follow thru.

so then.... next thing you know those kittens are having kittens. :coffee:

Read it again- she said she has had multiple calls on the already vetted kittens- those are the ones I was referring to giving away. I agree with you- you cannot trust someone to spay or neuter kittens.

:yay:....

If they cant even spend 128 buck (very cheap) on the adoption....

one can only think ...they wont even care for the pet they way it deserves to be cared for.... especially if it gets sick or hurt.

nor would I trust them to follow thru with the rest of the vetting the kitten needs ... such as boosters and rabies shot and rechecking the fecals.

many of the kittens that are adopted out are still to young to have all the booster shots and rabies shot.

A home that can't come up with the $128 for the vet fees isn't a good home prospect. I agree with ICit - if they are unwilling to pay $128 vet work, they are not likely to maintain the boosters and repeated vaccines.

As I said before, I'm not here to pay for these cats so people can get free kittens. I can't afford to do that. So since the kittens are not moving, I stop taking new cases in. That means more will live in hoarding situations, or be put down at the area shelters.

My coworker who has a vet buddy took the buff un-vetted male for a $40 donation <G>. He will get his vet buddy to do all the work cheaper than even I get it done - I was cool with that. He already had 1 adult female kitty, otherwise I would have talked him into taking 2 kittens.
