There is an obvious truth that I increasingly feel the need to say out loud: We are all American citizens. We are all entitled to the same rights and protections, no matter where we live or what the color of our skin is. The reason I feel the need to say it is that on the South Side of Chicago where I live and minister, it's not obvious.

And this is despite the fact that we are literally drowning in race these days. In the two years since George Floyd was murdered, we have had the Black Lives Matter movement, the Defund the Police movement, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion movement, and the movement to remove ACT and SAT tests, stripping schools of honors classes and wasting valuable time on white privilege instead of educating our kids upward. The latest is the SAFE-T Act, which would abolish the cash bail system.

How did this happen? Burlington had a cap of about 100 police officers in 2020 but after the death of George Floyd the progressives on the city council decided to reduce that by about 30%. They planned to defund the police gradually through attrition. But this is one case where they overdelivered.

Soon after the City Council passed its policing measure in June 2020, many officers left the force. Some went to work in other police departments. One now works in health care. Another is selling rabbits.
Chief Murad, a Vermont native, said that, in their exit interviews, the departing officers told him that they did not feel “valued” by the community after the vote to reduce the department’s size.
There are now 61 officers on the force, but only 53 are actively deployed because of issues like injuries and military service. It is far below the cap of 74 that the council originally set.

Burlington’s police chief went to Harvard and is committed to police reform. But he says the current staffing level is a problem. During some parts of the day there are only two officers on patrol in all of downtown. He doesn’t know what is causing the increase in bike thefts but he notes that dealing with it could be a challenge thanks to a memo put out be local prosecutors that says in order to convict someone you have to prove they “actually knew” the items in their possession were stolen.

In short, if you don’t catch them in the act of stealing, you probably can’t get a conviction. If you do catch someone with a stolen bike, they can just lie and the police will do nothing because they are badly understaffed.

Rantz: Seattle Councilmembers are trying to defund the police again

Despite a rise in crime, some on the City Council are trying to defund the Seattle Police Department again. Too bad it’s getting scant or disingenuous coverage.

The council is currently debating Mayor Bruce Harrell’s budget. Anti-police councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, who once defended a man threatening to murder police, is looking to cut funds from the SPD permanently. She just doesn’t want you to realize it’s part of the defund movement.

[clip]

The amendment would mean that a Council, already filled with anti-police activists, would decide to fund more police officers when the time comes that police want to work for the city again. Mosqueda, along with councilmembers Lisa Herbold, Kshama Sawant, Dan Strauss, and Andrew Lewis, have worked to keep the SPD small so they can invest in ineffective community programs that go to nonprofits and activists that help keep them in office.

Lewis has changed his tune on policing, and seems genuine in understanding his previous positions hurt the city. Herbold and Strauss have changed their tone somewhat, but it’s for political benefit. Sawant openly hates cops.

Councilmembers Alex Pedersen, Sarah Nelson, and sometimes Debora Juarez have taken reasonable views on policing and the budget. But they might not be able to convince other councilmembers to refund the SPD, especially given there will always be competing left-wing programs or initiatives to fund. Indeed, Mosqueda wants $1.5 million in extra funding to provide taxpayer funded abortions, despite knowing there’s an enourmous budget shortfall.
