This is yet another example to question the Town of La Plata using tax dollars in the tune of over $4Million annually for their own Police Department. Here's is an incident that occurred in the Town limits. Yet both the La Plata Police and the Charles County Sheriff's Office responded. As noted in the article CCSO took and continue to be in charge of the investigation. It's good that LP Police and CCSO work together and back each other up. It's very apparent that CCSO has the expertises and still continues to provide services to Town of La Plata residents, while La Plata Police respond to things like shoplifting and parking disputes at Walmart and less serious calls. Anything major seems to be passed on to CCSO. For a $4M annual police budget La Plata Police should be expected respond and then investigate most of the calls with in the Town. Yet many of La Plata Police budget line items reflect expenses for take home use of police cars and fuel cost, etc. CCSO does indeed provide outstanding services for the entire Country which includes the town's of Indian Head and La Plata. CCSO Headquarters is located in the Town of La Plata and the Maryland State Police Barracks near by. It would be great for La Plata to be served by just one public safety agency like CCSO, which is one of the oldest and very best in the entire country and unlike the La Plata Police has FULL response and investigative capabilities anywhere within Charles County. The Town of La Plata could contribute to CCSO cost and maybe even use part of their $4M plus annual police budget savings to put back into upgrading the town parks, hiring a budget officer (not just the improving Town Hall or constructing a new Town Police building) but things that would help and be of interest for everyone to enjoy, while at the same time help reduce crime and enhance our wonderful community.
