Deviated septum

Little ol' Me
So my son has a really bad deviated septum, we were told he needs to have surgery to fix it and straigten his nose from a previous broken nose. It causing breathing problems.

Has anyone had a child go through this?
Can anyone recommend a good doctor for me to take him to?

What exactly is a deviated septum?
You've seen my nose, well that's what it looks like. Don't know if he's still around or not, but Dr. Marinelli at Calvert Memorial did my nose quite a few years ago. Might be retired by now.

A septum that goes / or \ instead of l

Exactly..... :killingme

It is the cartledge in the nose is bent and not straight up and down like it should be and blocks the airway in your nose. Makes it hard to breath and smell...

I have a deviated septum but it is not severe enough to have required surgery to correct the breathing. It does get in the way when I'm doing cardio exercises as the nose breathing intake does not flow well and I sound like I have a boogie stuck in my nose. :ohwell: I am a firm believer my septum got deviated by my older brother who constantly did the "Mug!" nose musher manuever while I was growing up...:cussing:

With my nose, you can see it from the outside. It was a lot worse before the surgery. Wasn't looking to make it pretty, just functional.

That is how my son is, you can clearly tell by looking at it (not up it) that its not straight. He plays soccer and doctor says it would help him breath and sleep alot better.

Thanks for the doctor info Vince.

I would start by asking the doctor that diagnosed him for a referral.

Get a good doctor. I had mine first surgery done at Bethesda. They screwed it up. Dr. Marinelli had to do mine in two surgeries. Post surgery he'll have packing in his nose for a week. A little difficult sleeping, but when they pull that packing out and you can breath again.....he'll love that part.

Dr. Diadoine in Prince Frederick, MD, office in a building right beside Calvert Memorial Hospital. Outstanding ENT. She is a short lady, but as nice as you could ever find. An outstanding doctor. Since I used to work at NIH years ago, I knew quite a few ENT doctors. I believe you will like her. Breathing problems caused by a DS is something that should be corrected early in the child's life. This is because the allergies caused by the DS can become a problem. Good luck.

I had mine fixed several years ago. The worst part was the super huge "tampons" shoved up my nose and in my sinus cavity. There was some bleeding afterward but I had gauze taped to my face to help staunch the flow. I didn't have black eyes or anything afterward. Only had to have the packings in for two days. After they were removed my nose was tender and swollen but in less than a week I was pretty good to go. Good luck to your son. The procedure really isn't bad at all.

Thank you! Now I can tell him what to expect. This doesn't sound like it will be to hateful....
