We really had something like that happen at my grandma's farm except it was italian squash instead of watermelons. Grandma and grandpa were going on vacation for a couple of weeks so grandma was having a neighbor come by to take care of the garden, apparently somewhere the ball got dropped about keeping the the squash off of the tree because it will climb as fast as english ivy. Well the squash vines climbed the tree and proceeded to grow squashes. Looking at the tree from the road with two foot long squashes hanging from it, it looked like the tree was growing dildos, there had to be at least 50 squashes hanging from it.
