Directv to limit pay per view viewing time

In a move that can be interpreted as a cave in to major movie studios, DirecTV has recently announced that they will begin limiting pay per view movies recorded to the Directv DVR. Effective April 15, 2008 all pay per view movies recorded by the DirecTV DVR will automatically be deleted 24 hours after initial recording.

"Major movie studios have required that satellite and cable providers alike may no longer allow their customers to view these recordings for longer than 24 hours” reads the DirecTV announcement.

This move will eliminate the ability to view a PPV recording several times, or even the ability to view a recording made more than a day after recording, which will force consumers to pay for each viewing, or go out and purchase the movie from a retailer. For example, a customer may record a pay per view movie on a Sunday night, intending to watch it the next day, but does not have the opportunity until Tuesday. The recording that has been paid for has already been deleted and the customer must repay the pay per view fee and re-record the movie at a later time.

This move puts satellite pay per view recordings at a significant disadvantage compared to traditional DVD rentals, which can be watched numerous times or even Internet downloads which allow a user to watch the movie for up to 30 days after downloading and viewing for the first time.

The 24 hour pay per view limit will not affect recording made to your DirecTV DVR before April 15, 2008, nor is it expected to affect older DirecTV-TiVo systems.

What, you can't just pay for it when you want to watch it?
Because it takes 13-20 hours for the damn thing to download a movie from DirecTV. Once you've finally got it downloaded, it goes *POOF* and you're screwed.

The movie industry can go to hell. They aren't feeling #### from the economy. They're counting their billions in profit and seeking more regulation to make sure you pay them $10 to get screwed out of seeing a movie.

I think it's a load of crap. Hubby will be pissed cause I know there's a few movies he has watched at least a dozen times and will watch a dozen more. Wonder what would happen (at Direct tv) if consumers either cancelled their DVR service and sent it back or just boycottd PPV movies?

I just signed up with Directv, and got the NFL ticket Sunday.
They threw in the HD/DVR for free! I'm happy about that, but
I have a question for everyone. Do you like your HD/DVR? and
is the service from Directv good?

As for the PPV I'm not to sure how it works (have comcast now),
but can someone explain little more. I'm guessing you can DVR
what movies you order, and after a certain period it will no
longer be on your DVR? Sorry new to this! TIA

I don't think PPV has to download. You just pay and watch it immediately. On demand does take time to download though.

We have the DVR and The Sunday Ticket. Hubby LOVES it. It could cost $500 and he'd get a second job to pay for it. His team is not local so being able to see (and scream) at them every Sunday is a big must. Over all, I'm pretty happy with Dtv. We had had problems with out DVR's "breaking" on us and having to get new ones. That sucks because everything you've recorded is erased. I know we've lost at least $200 worth of movies each time (it's happened 4 times in 3 yrs.).

On a side note, I just checked my DVR and I still have movies from earlier this month. They haven't been deleted.

I have DirecTV, can't say I like it either but we are too rural to get cable out here. I told them to keep their DVR and use my TIVO unit still. I can record and burn any movie I want to a DVD.

I would loooove to be able to burn movies off the DVR but haven't been able to find anyone who knows how it can be done (unless it can't be done).

Upon second thought I'm not so sure. That's kind of hubby's thing. I'll have to experiment tonight, I thought we could though.

I have a ADS DVD express video card, run the video cable from the sat reciever to it, attach usb to computer, run program, select > burn direct to disc < and start burning as the movie plays, video splitter if I want to watch and burn at same time.

:duel: Take that Direct Tv Its only illegal if I sell for profit!

Hmmm, very interesting. Of course I have no idea what a ADS DVD express video card is, :lmao:

It is a video capture card I purchased back when I wanted to change my VHS tapes to DVD I have had it for awhile. might need to Goole to find something similiar. it basically attaches analog video, RCA video/audio jacks, to your computer. CompUSA has them, look up "Video capture"

They've been doing it for awhile now.

When Juno was on Pay Per View I ordered it for the girls, not knowing I only had it for 24 hours and it was deleted before we watched it.

I called DTV to ask why and the guy I talked to told me that people would order the pay per views, especially the wrestling and boxing stuff and for days after would charge people to come watch so they were only offering them for 24 hours now to try and stop that.

I told him that at my local video store I got the same movies on DVD for 3 days at the same price of DTV's pay per views and it was just a matter of convenience and that I could watch them whenever I wanted that kept me ordering them from DTV. He flippantly said to rent at a video store or wait a few more months for them to be on the premium channels if I didn't like the new policy.

No more pay per views for us.
