Directv to limit pay per view viewing time

Am I right to assume Direct TV tivo and their DVR are one and the same?

DirectTV Tivo was the original one sold. It has TIVO software with all the search features, wishlists, etc. DirecTV now sells a DVR without Tivo for the sole purpose of saving money on licensing fees. My DirecTV Tivo is starting to freeze at times, if I can't fix it, may be stuck with their new, inferior system. Both have DirecTV Receivers built in, mine can record two cahnnels at once.

Even before the DirecTV with Tivo, their recording receiver was called Ultimate TV. I think still have that one setup in my son's room.

We've also been having the freezing problem with our DirecTV Tivo. We have to unplug the back about once a week it seems, to unfreeze it.

We also have an HD receiver with DVR that we don't have that problem with.

My Dish DVR was doing that, turns out the hard drive was failing. It has since crashed. Can't just replace the drive, it uses a proprietary OS which is not easily replaced. For the cost of repair, I can buy a new HD DVR.

And here's another twist to recording....

Court upholds Cablevision plan for remote DVRs -- Newsday.com

Cablevision, which owns Newsday and is based in Bethpage, in spring 2006 announced plans to test a service that would allow its subscribers to digitally record up to 45 hours of programs on storage drives housed on its central computers. Users would have to subscribe to the digital iO service and use their existing digital box and remote to control the service, but would not have to buy or rent a set-top DVR such as TiVo's or one provided by Cablevision.

buy an older independent DVR .... I just acquired 2 Replay TV 45XX series

there is loads of info, a PC based java app that will download the files, the 4xxx series have Commercial Skip and Internet Sharing .... ie I could send you a recorded show ..... there is a huge website dedicated to people sharing recordings ...

Mom's has 2 160 Hard Drives for 320 Hrs of record time @ standard setting and you can up grade these things yourself if you are computer savvy

Where could we find an older independent DVR?

You can make one from a PC and a video capture card.

look for Myth TV ... Linux Based Solution ...

you can record as many TV Shows as you have tuner cards ... and one company makes dual tuner cards ....

Seeing as how my DirecTV Tivo was freeezing intermittantly on certain recorded shows, I ordered new DirecTV DVR. Not impressed. Reading the manual, apparently no real wish list that you can save, have to redo every so often. Can't watch a show being recorded if another is also. Doesn't have Tivo patch to resolve conflicts in schedule.

DirecTV said I could send it back for full refund as long as I don't activate it. Very nice of them. Seriously thinking of learning to live with the short pauses.

Anyone else have comment on new DirecTV DVR vice DirecTV TIVO?

DirecTV was good enough to put all the NBC Satelite channels running Olympics from 750-755. Nice, the NBC Olympic Soccer Channel is great, UHD just seems to be coping MSNBCHD or CNBCHD so far. NBC so much better than ABC's coverage, no slight on Jim McKay RIP, but these people better.

We are on our third dvr system, all replaced for free. Mainly hard drive errors. We have had the older DVR system and our new one is the same yo can set it up to search for movies, actors etc and record those shows/movies when they come on. We can watch one thing while something else is recording, or record 2 shows at once and watch something prerecorded while it is recording. Our list is set it has over 30 shows to record, never had a problem with it missing anything unless someone cancels it while its recording.

The first unit lasted about 2 years, the second about 6 months and the new one is going on one month with no problems. Always have had good things with directv.

Well, I already called to ask them to take the DVR back, FEDEX comes today.
My reading of manual was that for wish list, one had to find the show manually, then set to record. Could save old searches to reuse. Not the same as Tivo. Also, no suggestions, though we don't use it. My wife, who complained about the freezing then complained I ordered new one for a total of $126 with tax and shipping. not RF remote, but I would have used the adapter I bought from Smarthome to convert DirecTv Tivo to RF, replaces a AA cell in remote.

What I asked DirecTv, but it is not allowed is to have a 10 day trial period, but once you activate it, you must keep it.

Book said if two programs being recorded, one can't watch one of them, maybe book written for people less technical than an EE. Also, it does not have the recent Tivo patch to automatically adjust start/stop times to eliminate conflict for the slight differences in start and end times of programs.

I also hate to get rid of something when it still works somewhat.

You got free exchange, either you have protection plan or you lease the receiver. I got mine before the leasing deal started.

Your track record with the DVR's doesn't sound too good, Had ours for many years at least four.
