Would you be opposed to the Dixie Chicks if they took the other route? Wholeheartedly supporting The Bushies despite all the evidence that they were wrong in every regard?
Prolly not, I'm guessing.
Country music is now only "country" if it kisses the Republicans' asses.
"We, the neutered...promise to be passified by the rulers...."
etc...
At least country fans can spell "pacified". Unless you're inventing a totally new word. I'm disappointed, however, that the best you can do is just insult country fans. It's probably the only reason I'm disaffected by the Chicks.
Sure, they have a right to speak their mind - and amazingly, their "dumb f*ck" comment was a reaction to Bush's reply to Tom Brokaw that they have the right to say whatever they want and they shouldn't have their feelings hurt that some people responded by not buying their records, because freedom is a two-way street. Their brilliant reaction was not to take issue or to argue his points but to cleverly call him a dumb f*ck.
My disappointment with the Chicks is they blame *THE FANS*. They blame country music. They "took back" their apology. They made being "victimized" by the whole thing a career in itself. They behaved like spoiled children. I don't dislike them for that, I just don't give a crap anymore.
But your analogy fails - the "opposite" approach would be to be nasty towards the Clintons, or to Gore, or to John Kerry, publicly. Because for one thing, politics isn't this guy right and all those guys wrong. Well, it might be if you're liberal. And it similarly doesn't make sense to be against someone because they're loyal to someone despite evidence to the contrary. Most hard-core political types are *EXACTLY* that way - hence, we have people like Ted Kennedy continuing to serve as a Senator.
But I meant the comment about maybe if you're liberal - because no one *is* "wrong in every regard" anymore than a hair style is wrong in every regard. By any reasonable measure, right or wrong in politics is entirely subjective. Most conservatives I know believe this - which is why, most conservatives I know are far more tolerant of differences of opinion than liberals are. You don't even have to go far to see it; Bush has responded repeatedly through his administration with patience and tolerance for those who disagree with him. Clinton and Gore called them right-wing nuts and extra-chromosome. Which side of the aisle pounds the lectern with hysteria? Which side patiently declares that they simply disagree?
