DIY Crabpots...I need the materials?

I am looking for some crab pots and stumbled across this article on building your own. That sounds like more fun that just buying someone elses...!

Anyway, anyone know where I can find some crabpot wire...kinda like chicken wire but better suited to the saltwater environment. It has 1 1/2" mesh spacing.

And some eelpot wire eelpot wire. This has 1" x 1/2" mesh size to storing the bait inside of.

Not sure where around here would have those supplies; anyone know?

Thanks!

Check with Ridge Marine. I know they all sorts of crab pot equipment and sell their own crab pots, so I'm sure they have the wire. If not, check with a place called Shady Side, I think, over in Colonial Beach.

It might be cheaper at home depot.

And as for the rotting chicken to use as bait... PM K_Jo... she may have extra sitting on her counter...:yay:

I thought it was day-old-on-the-counter Big Macs

Since you own waterfront property, why can't you afford to buy two crab pots?

When did I ever mention I owned waterfront in this post? Anyway...cost wasn't the point. The point was (and I meant -than- instead of -that-):

Read the regs before you start building crab pots. I believe it says you're allowed two in front of your property with a sport liscense.

I bought the vinyl covered wire from Ridge Marine for the last live box I built but that was several years ago. Local hardware stores may have the same stuff now but cheaper but be sure you get the heavy gauge material.

Thanks, I've been reading through those regulations you sent me and it looks like crab pots are out for the recreational crabber. Indeed it does say you can have two pots if you own or lease waterfront and they are within 100yards of your property.

So I guess otherwise, as a recreational crabber you can only use those traps that lay flat and open on the bottom until you pull them up, at which time they close up. Well, that sure is a lot more work to get enough for dinner! I'm guessing the laws are meant to protect the crabs in case of lazy rec. crabbers forgetting to haul in their crab pots.

Thanks for the info; can someone confirm what I think I've read, or tell me otherwise?
