Do you know what these are?

If you read the different sites, they do call them bears, but like K_Jo pointed out, they are in their own group, related to bears and raccoons.

Awwww!

I'm curious, though, how long people can handle a panda without it trying to eat them? Are pandas wild like other bears or are they tame and you can play with them?

Panda-Cam
^Not very exciting because the cam is in their indoor habitat - someone is in there cleaning it right now.

Thanks Vria for the link!!! Yes, you'd think Panda's would be larger, and unfortunately if I recall correctly, that is one of the reasons they are near extinction, the mother is too clumsey and sits on them and kills them accidentally. :frown:

Family: Ursidae Genus: Ailuropoda

Same as the Polar BEAR

Ursidae is the BEAR family to include the Panda.. black bear.. etc.. etc..

Red Panda is

Family: Ailuropodidae

Additional Information::
Although certain physical features led scientists to group red pandas in procyonidae (the raccoon family), DNA evidence suggests that both red and giant pandas should be listed in the bear family, Ursidae. It has been proposed by some scientists that red pandas be given their own family - Ailuridae.

Sounds like she would fit right in and make a great forum member. (the mother that is, not the dead baby)

That's what Channel 4 news said last year or the year before last when their was a baby on the way or one born - I forget which one. I remember this because I've seen mother animals and they are very, very instinctively aware of where their babies are and gentle. Kind of like if a mother cat were to jump off a roof and into her box of kittens, she'd land everyfoot where there wasn't a kitten... :shrug: That's why I thought it was sad that they were reporting that Mother Panda's were clumsy and that's why the zoo has to keep such a close watch on the little baby so it doesn't get crushed. :frown:

That would explain why they're becoming extinct.

Perhaps they’d rather kill their children than have them live a life of servitude

Well after researching it and not taking their statements at face value... I can't find anything about the mother's propensity to sit and squish them... :banghead: :lol: I did find an adorable picture though of one at 6 weeks old... what a cute baby!!!! :love:
