Do you tip your service guy?

HVAC just came to check out my AC unit for the summer, everything was fine, he was here about 40 mins. No charge because I have an annual contract with them, but I dropped the guy a $20 and he acted like it was completely unexpected. Was it too much? Too little? I'm having tip anxiety.



Do you tip like home maintenance people or movers or whoever comes to take care of something for you?

Do you get the same tech every time? I get two visits a year, every year, and I don't think I have ever seen the same person more than once.

I look at it from the other side. It shows your appreciation and $20 is about what it takes to buy a fastfood meal these days. I usually tell them, "I know it's not much, but lunch is on me." I'm mechanically inclined, but some things are better left to those who do it every day.

My wife was ordering dog fud from a place up near the New Carrollton Metro that had free delivery and the poor UPS guy had to lug 2 or 3 50lb boxes up to our door on each delivery, usually tipped him 20 every other delivery(deliveries were once a week(4 dogs). The company changed their delivery policy so we now ride up there and pick it up. The UPS guy delivered a car part for our son last week and asked how our dogs were, I said I bet you're relieved now that you don't have to deliver those boxes, he laughed and said it wasn't an issue, it was all in a days work. Made me wonder if he was missing his tips.

My battery system used FredEx, and I really felt for the driver. Batteries were 70 lbs each, main unit 150. Gave him a nice tip, and he asked, 'are you sure?'. Apparently a foreign concept for them, like Vrai said.

I guess I live in the low rent district - the most our store UPS driver gets is a free soda about once a week, but a hard time every day. But he must like the hard time we give him - he keeps coming back...

Gilligan and I are/were on first name basis will all of our UPS drivers. We even had their cell numbers in the event we needed them to stop by for a pickup. Since we were usually one of the last stops of the day, the tiki bar was always open if they needed some refreshment.
