On the breeds where they're common, they are often actually a "toe" and generally aren't removed.

Boxers don't have rear dew claws at all.
They are removed on Rotts, it's required by the AKC/ARC breed standard to remove rears, fronts are optional. I always leave the fronts on.

My mini poodle X is debarked. I adopted him July 07 and the previous owners debarked him. I would never do that to a dog. Oh and he was found on the side of the road before I adopted him...debarked and abandoned. At least he has a great home now :huggy:

The AKC standard says they may or may not be present (they're not taken into consideration for judging), so it is up to the breeder.

How horrible! How did that affect his personality? How has he chosed to express himself now that he can't "talk"?

can't debarked dogs "yodle"? debarked dogs can also still "bark" it just sounds hoarse and no longer yappy. Lots of sheltie folks do it, I've seen lots of barking shelties you can't hear, but they do make some sound.

Bassett peeps use bark collars. What's more humane? BARK-WHAP BARK-WHAP, or breathy barking to their heart's content?

They do sound hoarse, like they've lost their voice. I think it's silly people do that when they buy a yappy breed (like a sheltie).
