DOD civilian employees and use of base facilities

Gov't civilians, and DOD Contractors have access to all base MWR facilities, this change happened since I've been here, and I think it was about 2 years ago.

You can use the Drill Hall, the swimming pools, Solomons Rec Center, you can join the Archery Club, the Skeet and Trap club, the Sail Club.. etc.. etc..

For club memberships there are different prices for Retired Military, Active Duty, Gov't and Contractor, but the prices are VERY affordable for anyone.

Sounds like a lot of high living on the taxpayers' dime to me.

Dahlgren used to be an open base, and still pretty much is. The base pool is used for the local swim team, a lot of local civilians use the bank and a civilian bowling team uses the bowling alley, PAX is bigger so I wasn't sure if it ran the same.

I will have to look in to this...

At Solomons Rec center the only civilian employees that have access to use there facilities are Navy civilian employees.

A lot of those facilities would not be around still if it wasn't for allowing civilians to use them too. There is such a small military presence at PAX the existence of many would just not be justified.

Used to be on the govt dime, but all recreational facilities must run on their own profits, and not use govt money. As noted above, thats one reason they allow civilian workers access if they pay, because we dont have enough military on base to support them.

Last number I heard was +20 thousand workers on base, somewhere in the area of 2 thousand military.

Maybe you are right…. However; everyone has their opinion, but I can tell you that she is navy property now, so the navy is stuck with all these kids who swear in.

DOD civilians can walk away anytime they feel and are never held to a physical standard like the military. I wouldn't expect any civil servant to understand this.

You're gonna get 'roids from talking out your azz so much.

Maybe so, but I did spend 20 years of my life in the navy and now over 2 years working as a civil servant. Most of the career civil servants that I know have some knowledge about the lifestyle of a Sailor, but not a true grasp of the depths of it. The civil servants that I work with don’t even come in contact with active duty members unless it’s a meeting. Oh’ and I spent almost 2 years as a contractor so I’ve seen all sides.

There are so many retired and former military in NAVAIR that it almost looks like you can't get hired in to the gov't unless you have a DD214. Amongst the people I work with, it's literally easier to figure out who HASN"T served, verses who has. I realize my PMA and the rest of NAVAIR doesn't prove anything, but as a sample, I'm sure it represents something. We haven't even touched on how many people, both contractors and civilians, are in the National Guard and reserves. There's at least a half dozen in my office.

It’s the opposite of where I work. My whole office is career civil servant. There are only 3-4 of us out of several dozen that are retired.

I work on a military base (often) and many of my coworkers have wives that have access to the base for child care.

They will also issue you a CAC card so you can access the base as well, at least Boling AFB works like that. I just heard that one last week.

They will, saw it happen when I went to Anacostia to get a new CAC myself.

Haha, every one goes to Anacostia because the Navy Yard takes way too long and you have to schedule like a month in advance.
