Slow your ass down!

i know right? i haven't had a driving violation in over 4 years prior to 2012, and now i have about doubled my lifetime driving violations in only a year. no change to my driving style over that time period whatsoever, so i guess the police force has started cracking down

My last speeding ticket was in 86, thats not to say I have not on occasion exceeded the limit, I have. Ive just been lucky in those moments.

but, I think you might be right about the cracking down. Ive noticed a greater presence of police on the beltway in the mornings, and a greater number of people being pulled.

Even it is as I suspect, a revenue type of deal, the fact still remains that the people getting pulled are the ones that are speeding in the first place.

Now, I did get about 4 seatbelt violations in a two month period about 10 years ago, two of them in the exact same location 2 days apart. I finally figured it out and just started putting on the belt.

I thought no? I do rem as active duty on base the tickets were only sent to your commander and we were assessed points. After so many points in a year and you lost your driving privileges.

being active duty meant you were out of state. Depending on when you served the system might not have been able to update your state's database.

PAX River Police operate under the Assimilated Crimes Act which allows federal installations and DOD Police to enforce the same laws that citizens are held to out in town on base. That's why you will notice on your speeding violation it is a federal form but utilizes a Maryland Traffic Article 21-801.1 (Exceeding the Maximum Speed Limit). I think a lot of folks assume because they check I.D's for 2.5 hours every morning to get folks to work quickly that the scope of their responsibility is gate guarding when they have full law enforcement powers within all of the federal jurisdictions of Naval District Washington and yes that does include statutory powers of arrest.

But yet the civilian base police do not qualify to become state troopers or sheriff deputies without going through the police academy

Well you know what they say, there is the right way, the wrong way and the Maryland way...

Neither do deputies or other state troopers who come from departments outside of the state. Some states offer a condensed academy for officers coming from out of state, not certain if Maryland does. It seems from my experience that those DOD fellas seem pretty well versed on Maryland law and if everything is not by the letter of the law the magistrate who presides over all criminal matters tosses it.

is there anybody in here who has actually been pulled over by the DOD and can attest to it being reflected on their driving record?

I just called the base police.
It is the same ticket that you would get outside the gate.
And points on base go against your state license.

Jazz is right as always.

You used to be right, but it changed a while back. That's one reason there are no longer contractor security guards since their tickets could not go against your state record.

while I think we did have contractors manning the gates (where no citations would be handed out), I am pretty sure we have never had contractors acting as patrolling security/law enforcement. That has always been a mix of Auxiliary Security Force Sailors and DOD sworn officers.

20 years ago we had contractor guards at NESEA running radar traps. Not a real cop to be seen anywhere, other than the MSP and deputies doing their driving training on the runway.

Well, I did get here in 1993, but have never really spent any time at NESEA. I was speaking of Pax itself.

Yup. It was 12 or so years ago if memory serves. I got nabbed in a 35 mph zone having just past the sign; cop said I was doing 48 when I passed him; in one of those spots where it goes from 45 to 35.
Don't do that no more though. Fine AND 2 points FYVM. (I didn't SAY it)

Edit: Two phrases that can guarantee you at least get a warning ticket:
Officer: "Do you know how fast you were going?"
Me: "I'm bettin' you're gonna tell me how fast you THINK I was going."
OR

Officer: "Know why I stopped you?"
Me: "No, but I bet you're gonna tell me I was speeding."

I guess I need to quit betting. :ohwell:
