Dog Bones......

Actually, once a year or so I go to the butcher and ask him to give me knuckle bones or shin bones with marrow. I broil them in the oven, let cool and give it to the dogs as a special treat. They only get them supervised and they get taken away and tossed once the marrow/cartiledge is all gone.

I bought my dog a big knuckle bone and left her to have fun with it. I was sure there was no way she could break into it. Wrong! When I came back out it was gone!

I've been feeding my dogs a raw foods diet (B.A.R.F) for over 11 years now. I have NEVER had a problem with any bones I've given my dogs. As part of their diet they get raw chicken backs or turkey necks a couple times a week as their raw meaty bones. However they are ALWAYS raw. Cooked chicken bones are extremely brittle and can easily cause problems for your dog. The raw bones are actually somewhat pliable and the dogs have no problem with them. My 14 year old Golden Bulldog mix has been on the raw diet for over 11 years and my 6 year old Lab was raised on it. He's never eaten kibble a day in his life. My mother has a Corgi that has been on raw for years now as well. However because she is much smaller she gets chicken necks as part of her diet. I also give my dogs raw knuckle bones and marrow bones as recreational chew bones. After they play and chew on them for a day (outside!) I toss them before they dry out. I do occasionally give them dry roasted bones as these are considered safe because they haven't been cooked but personally I feel the raw bones are the safest. I would be worried about cooked rib bones though for my own dogs- just my opinion.

There was someone on another thread a week or so ago asking about the BARF diet.
