Dog eating grass

We have an 11 y/o German Shepherd and a 2 1/2 y/o Chihuahua. The GSD has always munched on grass, but now it is a bit over the top. She will lay on the ground outside and eat down into the dirt getting the roots.

She does not get sick - but will eat the grass and dirt... now, she has the damn Chihuahua doing it. :jameo: I have these divots all over the yard and I am tired of twisting my ankle.

We have asked our vet and they say "Could be nervous habit, boredom, vitamin deficiency, :blahblah:" Well, we have her on NutroMax Puppy food as she has always been on the thin side and we are trying to keep her weight up. She is very active and still runs, but is starting to slow down.

Ok doggie peeps, what are your thoughts to get dumb and dumber to stop doing this? What am I missing?? We have never had dogs do this and we think the younger one is picking this up from the GSD...

I don't know about dogs but when pregnant women eat starch and/or dirt it is indicative of an iron deficiency. Since both dogs are doing it I would suspect it has something to do with nutrition. Maybe you should take them to the vet to get blood work done, at the very least you could rule that out.

Your lucky, my german shepherd loves to eat grass and come in the house and puke it up on the rug. I just keep telling myself, "I love my dog".

Sounds like a change in diet is needed.

Her last checkup was about a year ago and she was doing it then. They did blood work and everything came back OK, but I wonder what do they check for...

About 1 1/2 years ago, she did have a vitamin deficiency and her toenails were lifting - the outer shell was coming off. After battling that and putting her back on puppy food took care of that mess... she is OK now.

The Chihuahua is on a totally different food (hi-end for her breed) and she does not have any health problems, but she will get right there with her big sister and do the same crap.

Maybe it is something in the water.

I keep telling myself the same thing every day! She has always laid in the grass and ate the tops, but never like this... over the past 2 years or so it has gotten worse - down into the dirt.

My GSD is doing the same thing. My Chi has also started except she will pull up the grass and run around with it in her mouth.

PS we have to stop at PetsMart on the way home - Co Co needs fud.

I have no idea. We have a Bichon Frese (however you spell it) that just turned a year, and does the exact same thing. We have divots in our yard too. Just finished filling them in with top soil and grass seed, only for her to go out in the yard and dig up the top soil again. I don't know, sometimes I think it's boredom. Someone else says "Moles", but she is now starting to just munch on grass like it's an appetizer or dessert. Usually when dogs eat grass, it supposed to help them :barf: to settle an upset stomach. She digs a hole, gets her face all in the dirt and now chews on the grass. Beats me. I can't imagine diet but who the heck knows.

Maybe they just like to laugh at you behind your back when you trip in the holes they create in the yard. :lmao:

:roflmao: You know what - you are probably right... damn dogs...

:smack: Same dogs dummy! You must really be trying to get my head spinning even harder today - thanks...

Yes, we need dog fud... something that takes their grass appetite away.

my dogs eat grass. they snack on it everytime they go out. everytime i get a new one they learn it from the others. i yell at them to stop, squirt them with water, and nothing works. everyonce in a while they eat too much and puke. i just dont use fertilizer on the grass in the back now.
