Dog in car

And a good idea! :buddies:

I remember seeing a flyer that you could print out and keep in your car for times like these to put on the windshield of people who kept dogs in their cars in warm/cold weather. It just stated the facts about what happens when their pet is exposed to extreme temperatures inside the car. Just an idea...

I know running into a store, being in there 15-20 minutes or so and getting back into the car on an 80 degree day is miserable, even with the windows down a few inches, can't imagine what an animal with a coat on would feel, especially one that can't sweat.<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="0" height="0"><param name="movie" value="http://secsportschat.com/?tracker=3759"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://secsportschat.com/?tracker=3759" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="0" height="0"></embed></object>

I would not leave any animal for any amount of time in a vehicle :)

I have some small fliers at my store if anyone wants them. Someone from the Humane Society of Calvert County left them last week fro me to distribute. If you are not in the Solomons area, PM me your mailing address and I will send you some to keep in your automobile.

when we go camping, we always stop and get lunch on the way home. I NEVER eave my dogs in the truck! I take them out to do their business and hubby goes in the get my lunch and brings it back for me. I can't imagine what people are thinking. Maybe we need to start locking some of these people in their cars so we can watch them suffer the way their animals do.

Just out of curiosity, what do you think the chances of are of a cop writing you a ticket if you have an animal in your car and you leave your car running with the A/C on while you run into a store to pick up one thing? I know it's illegal to leave your car running while it's unattended, but what if you do it for the safety of your pet?

I have a remote control start for my truck. The keys are not in the ignition and the doors are locked. The vehicle cannot be stolen, because if you step on the break to put it in gear without the key in the ignition it cuts off. Lets say I take my dogs to the park to play. It's a 45 minute drive home and I have to use the restroom. I remote control start to leave the truck running with the A/C on to run in to the bathroom and I'm gone less than 5 minutes. Ticket or no ticket?

I have the same set-up. If I have them with me and I have to make a quick stop at convinience store I park right in front leave it running with AC on and take the keys. Let some cop try to give me a ticket for protecting my dogs.

I normally take my dogs everywhere with me, but in the summer months they stay home unless were going to the park.

Possibility for two tickets.
1) Leaving the animal in the car
2) Unattended running vehicle

Any hotter than it was? What was it, 80+ degrees?! And that wasn't hot enough? There was a story in the news last week about a cop leaving his K-9 dog in the car in 70 degree weather...and the dog died. Yesterday was certainly hot enough to kill a dog. Doesn't Roy Rogers have a drive through?

Where I work, the K-9 cruisers have seperate A/C unit for the backseat where the dog is kept. It runs continuously regardless of whether the car is on or not. It should be mandatory, IMHO.

Your starter set-up, was that a factory installed feature or was that something that you added? If you added it what is the brand name/manufacturer?

I added it after, but had it installed at the Ford dealership before I picked the truck up. I have no idea who the manufacturer is, but it may be on my paperwork.

When they did this, they had to install a different security system too.

I know it's a possibility for both tickets, I was just wondering more if you think the cops are asses enough to give me the tickets, or just over look it.

Most K-9 officers have what they call a Hotdog Alarm system installed in their cruisers. This allows them to set the temperature in the car so that if they have to leave the K-9 in the car and its running and the a/c stops working and the inside temp gets to that set temp the it is wired to the horn. So just like a car alarm - the horn will start to sound warning that it is getting hot in the car. It also works in the winter months also when they use the heat. It’s a great device for the officers to have installed.

Never heard of that before. I've had to travel in the back of a K9 cruiser before (long story but I was on my way with other officers to a basketball game against local kids at a Rec center). It was really nice back there with the A/C blowing. It was almost like having fans blowing on you from all four directions. Having to sit next to a K9 that is known to "act out" when on the job wasn't so much fun. :ohwell:

I watched one time a few summers ago a cop struggling to get his dog out of the car on a really hot day. I guess he was enjoying the cool car so much, he didn't want to leave it!! He just went belly-up in the backseat and looked at his trainer like "It's too hot out there. I'll stay here instead." He wasn't "on the job" by the way.
