Anyone know the deal with this????

LEONARDTOWN, Md. (Aug. 5, 2009) -- Annual licenses for dogs in St. Mary's County are required and can be purchased in the County Treasurer's Office in the Patuxent Building in Leonardtown, the Animal Control Office in the Public Safety Building in Leonardtown, at the Well Pet Clinic in Lexington Park (301-866-0303), All Kinds Veterinary Hospital in Callaway (301-994-9919) and the Tri County Animal Shelter in Hughesville (301-932-1713).

The licenses cost $2.00 per pet for spayed or neutered animals; the cost rises to $7.50 for non-spayed or non-neutered animals. To receive the discounted prices, residents must show proof that their animal is spayed or neutered and a current rabies vaccination is required to obtain the license.

The fee can be paid with cash or a money order or check made payable to the St. Mary's County Treasurer.

The license period runs from July 1 to June 30 and tags need to be purchased by August 31 to avoid a $2 late penalty.

Yeah, I found out when my dog jumped the fence and was picked up by the puppy police. They asked me for it when I went to pick her up, and I had no clue what it was. The woman in the office said they could stop by your house and ask to see the license if they see your animals outside. It has been two years since this happened, and I have yet to be asked for the license by anyone.

What is the point of this? It's still illegal if they catch you driving your dog!

If I have to pay the state anything concerning my dogs, even if it's $2 per pet, then I should be able to claim them as dependents on my taxes...like that would EVER happen! That's Maryland for you!
