Dog Smell

Help, our dog smells like a dog, which my hubby and i can't stand. I will elaborate, he is a yorkie and a great family pet but we let him on the couch since we got him from the breeder and recently we had to go out and get new couches b/c the couches reeked of dog. We have since not allowed the dog on the new couch. We have a split foyer and have kept him downstairs when we are not home to retrain him to not lay on the couches all day. We have had success with this by buying him a doggy bed for both up and downstairs and he seems to be doing ok with it. We make sure to give him the same attn. since he has been raised a lap dog. Since we seem to have that under control, he sleeps in our sons bed every night, our son doesn't mind it but I feel like when we walk by our sons room we can smell the dog. We are getting ready to move into a new house and I would like the dog to have his own sleeping area without crating him. I feel like he advanced from that once he was potty trained and I do NOT want to punish him, any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Just to give you an idea of the new house for suggestions, 4 levels, finished basement, main level, bedroom level and 4th floor game/guest level. I don't want to punish him or anything but I want to stop stinking up the house. we love our dog and bathe him once every two weeks like the vet said but sheesh.

Unfortunately the only place I have been able to find it is Petsmart. I have ordered it online though. It's not that expensive, in fact if you do a google search it may come up with a really cheap price for you. Here's one I just happened upon.

Dog Grooming Supply - Groomers.com

Have you thought about having him groomed regularly? Bath and nails is pretty cheap on a yorkie...

I'm kind of a noobie, but don't you do grooming? I have been taking him to Petco since I have got him, every six weeks. Unknowingly he got sick the 2nd to last time I took him, fever and massive scratching to the bleeding point, not putting two and two together I took him again 6 weeks later and he had the same problem. He was sooo sick I had to take him to the vet and he was on antibiotics, steroids etc.... I will never take him there again!!! He has bad allergies and we have figured that out over time spending a bunch of money on different food etc.

If I am right PM me with your contact info and I will gladly have you groom him and hopefully he will not come home sick. FYI last time I dropped him off at 9am and usually he was always done by 11 am and this past time I called at 3pm and he was not done yet WTF is the point of an appt

I dont get what happened to him...Was he digging at himself? Was he cut short? Most Yorkies we just trim their feet..under their eyes under the tail and the private area..$20-$25...full clip like a Schnauzer or something $35..I do not make "appts" as in every 1/2 hr drop offs..because if someone no shows you sit and wait..I have drop off times and get to them as I can..usually never here more then 3 hrs..and some out in an hour or so..I do try to work with peeps and their concerns...Still dont understand what happened to him at Petco...seems odd...

Paso, I can give my dog a bath and ten minutes after that bath she smells like a dog again. I can scrub her down 2 and 3 times, till she's almost bald and she smells like a dog again. I have tried everything, even that stuff you recommended, she will still eventually smell like a dog. I suggested the grooming spray as a quick fix and it does work and will work until you feel like bathing her again. I just know with my dog, the more I wash her the more her skin dries out and I thought that was bad for her. My sister was a groomer too, she said it is because my dog has allergies, and that they expel the allergies through their skin and that's where the smell comes from. Some dogs just stink more than others. I had one that smelled like dirty feet all the fricken time! :barf:

you are right...allergy dogs stink all the time...even after a bath... Fresh and clean makes a good shampoo too...try a tar sulfer that will dry out the oily part that smells....

He was digging himself, mainly around his tail. I do have him cut very short, like 1/2inch. If that is the problem lemme know I will stop but I highly doubt this makes him sick. I am not a pet expert but I am willing to go the extra mile for Jack (my Yorkie) It breaks my heart when we come home the next day after Petco and he is bleeding around his tail and my son is crying about his doggy, he is afterall a part of our family and I just want to help him in any way I can. Yes, I can't stand the smell but I want to make it enjoyable for the whole family

I did try Fresh and Clean before, I have not tried tar or sulfer shampoo though. I will keep that in mind. I was just saying I use that spray as she comes in from outside from pottying and spray her back and belly once and she smells good till she goes out again. Lasts a long time. :yay:

1/2" is NOT very short...lol...If I do a schnauzer on a Yorkie the back is like 1/16 I think lol..Bleeding from the butt on top or under the tail? Allergic to fleas he might have picked up there? Digging is not a sickness...fever is..Just trying to figure it out..allergic to their shampoo? did you call them to try to figure it out? Poor guy...odd..

I was thinking SHORT...ie razor burn...then scratch dig..make raw..

I once had a Yorkie that had such a severe thyroid problem that she lost almost all her hair and she stunk and itched constantly. They took her to a Yoikie rescue ( this is when I did not have my husband and had no money) and found her a home where they could get her the surgery she needed and the last I heard she was very healthy and happy.

It's been so long ago I don't remember what it was called. Just have his thyroid tested. Chances are he is fine and just has doggie allergies. My Yorkie was a freak of nature. Poor dog. :frown:
