Doggie Smell

The downstairs of our home is now doggie central - it's where they live. With their doggie door installed - and with the door to the doggie-door room closed most of the day - they spend most of their time inside. The room with the doggie door is now a great big doghouse, with food blankets and water.

To keep the smell out - we bathe the pups at least once a week, and they're getting used to it, mostly. We also shampoo the rugs every week, whether they pee on it or not (they are still pups, and have "accidents"). And we mop down their "room", including their cages, at least once a week with bleach.

It still smells - "doggie".

Not like urine or feces - like mildly wet dog. It just smells like a dog down there.

How do I combat this smell? I can't seem to clean the place fast enough.

When you figure it out, let me know. :lmao: Our dog smells like fritos though, so at least it's not an offensive smell. His crate is in our office, and he really only sleeps in there, but it still smells like corn chips in there.

Fritos? :killingme :lmao:

I use Febreze to take care of that doggy smell.

Yes, don't even ask, I have no idea why. :lmao:

I bought some of the Febreze Air Effects (I think that's what they're called)...that stuff rocks. :yay:

Just curious.. do you let the dogs go in while their coats and/or their beds/rugs/etc are still wet?

Sam, You shouldn't bathe them so much. It dries out their coat and is possibly making the oil glands in their skin work overtime which could be contributing to the smell. Try some of that dog spray or dry bath stuff.

Mily, Thank you for not smelling funky. :lmao:

You know you want your house to smell like corn chips.

His frito scent has settled down in the last week or so. We've only bathed him twice, and that was because he stepped in his own crap. :roflmao:

Dogs smell. Cats smell. Hamsters smell. It's just the way it is and one of the hazards of having pets.

My SIL is a fanatic about her doggy-smelling house and she works her butt off trying to keep it odor free. Doesn't work.

Sam here are some baking soda tidbits in regards to pets...

Clean and deal with pet smells using baking soda

Instead of buying expensive cat litter, I buy the cheapest and add a box of baking soda. The box is easier to clean and there is little smell!

To clean your kitty's pan, soak for 10 mins. half filled with water and about a cup of vinegar. Dump the water and scrub the pan with baking soda and a damp paper towel or rag. Dry and it's fresh and ready to fill.

Another reader wrote this: "I found that pouring a little baking soda into my cat's litter box keeps the odors out longer. Also my cat had a little accident on the carpet. Getting rid of the urine smell was awful. Nothing worked until I mixed in Lemon Essential Oil with the Baking Soda. Now you can't even tell.

Another reader adds: I have an OLD cat who has taken to urinating on the cement floor in my basement, in one spot only. This can get quite annoying and smelly. I had been sprinkling the area with baking soda hoping to abate the smell. To further clean up the area I decided to apply a splash of vinegar. The foaming action and a little scrubbing cleaned it up quite well!

Pets other than cats:

This reader says: My son wanted a ferret as a pet so bad, but he had a hard time keeping the cage clean. The smell alone from the ferret is bad enough. I suggested to him that he put a layer of baking soda under the bedding after every cleaning. He tried it and it worked great!

Dusting your dog with baking soda several hours before a bath will kill a lot of fleas and odor. Be sure to wash or rinse off the baking soda thoroughly.

To get a white horse or other animal ready for show, rub a paste of baking soda and water into stains on their coats. Brush well to remove it.

One pint of peroxide to two tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of dish soap will take skunk smell off your pet. It works fantastically.

Dissolve baking soda in water, soak dog scarves, hang outside on line to dry. Tie dried scarf around dogs neck. Almost eliminates doggy odor entirely. I do up a bunch all at once and change as needed.

Hard flooring throughout. My house does not smell. The laundry room where the cat box is has a Glade oil plug in and the box gets cleaned out completely once a week. Mily has designated herself a $1500 chair as her own though and it smells a little. Not bad enough that my dad doesn't move her sheepskin dogbed thingy off it and sit on it every time he comes over. It smells like dirt though not like dog. I guess from her paws?

Nic, I think it's a puppy/crate thing. I do remember Mily's area smelling when she was a pup. She's very rarely crated anymore so maybe she just has more time to air-out. :lmao:

Sure it does. If you have a pet, your house smells. You probably can't smell it anymore, but because I have cats and no dogs I'll bet I could smell a dog in your house. I don't smell cats in other houses because I'm used to it. But I can smell a dog a mile away.

I'm not saying your house stinks, I'm saying it almost certainly smells like dog. My Mom's house was very clean and she kept her Schnauzer clean, too. But you could still smell it.

You're invited over any time you want to come.

Of course Mily will probably bite your nose off your face before you make it past the threshold since she's a mean ol' nasty Pit Bull and all. :lmao:

I have 4 dogs and 4 cats and one bird and my house stinks.
Birds stink :dead: My SIL's MIL (got that? ) has a cockatiel and the smell of that bird about knocks me over every time I go to their house. Nobody else can smell it but it's a distinct birdie odor.

Hmmmm...maybe that's why you think your house doesn't smell. "Dope, dod't sbell a thig..."

Anyway, a house can have an odor without it being unpleasant. My SIL's house doesn't stink - it just smells faintly of dog.

I used to housesit for family friends that had 2 birds...for the life of me I can't remember what kind. They were awesome birds, and were allowed out of their cages during the day. They ate an all natural diet, and were very well taken care of. Their house definitely didn't smell. :yay:

You are just in a stinky mood.

And, Sam, do you let the dogs in any other room in the house or do you just keep them in their room and outside? That's probably why the one room smells...it's like a kennel.

Stop bathing them so much. Like Pixie said you're ruining their skin. Their poor oil glands are working overtime to compensate for all the bathing which makes them smell. My dogs have never had a bath. I clean their ears and wipe/rinse them off if they get muddy, etc.

Really? What do you wipe them down with?
