School drops Pledge of Allegiance during ceremony

PORTLAND, Ore. - The exclusion of the Pledge of Allegiance from a southwest Portland elementary school's ceremony has proved upsetting for a local mom.

Departing fifth-graders at Capitol Hill Elementary usually open their promotion ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance - but not this year.

"I was sad," said parent Briana Reese. "The flag was sitting up there, you know. Two of the kids went up and they said 'Everybody rise,' and we rose, and I thought for just a second 'Oh yeah, we're going to put our hands on our hearts and we're going to salute the flag' - but no."

Reese had heard that the principal planned to take the pledge out of the ceremony.

"I think that's what they should be doing - telling kids you should be pledging your allegiance to this country," Reese said. "This is a great country. You're here for a reason."

The pledge was instead replaced with a singing version of the preamble to the Constitution.

KATU tried repeatedly to talk with Principal Pam Wilson but got no results. However, in an e-mail response to Reese's questions, she explained the pledge was removed "out of respect for the diversity of religious faiths." READ THE FULL E-MAIL.

Some parents support the principal's decision.

"I think it's nice to be trying to consider everybody," said parent Teri Price. "But I don't think she necessarily meant it to be that controversial. I think she just wanted a change."

The Portland School District said there were no complaints about the pledge. They said they have little say in how principals handle end of the year ceremonies at individual schools.

The following is the full e-mail response that parent Briana Reese received from Principal Pam Wilson:

"The Pledge contains the words, 'under God' and we have many Muslim families here. So out of respect for the diversity of religious faiths practiced by our school community (parents and families) we decided that this year the students would memorize and sing the Preamble to the Constitution. At the rehearsal on Friday they did it from memory and to a wonderful song. It was very joyful and unique. I think you, and other parents, will really appreciate the creative and new way to open the program."

GOD forbid we offend the Muslims :jameo:

PUH-LEEZE Get a grip b/c if we don't soon we'll be pledging allegiance to Allah.

To the Muslims: Just don't say it, repalce God with Allah, switch it up, its our flag and if you are a citizen then its your flag too. I'm not all for bringing church and state together but come on!

Don't Muslims believe in a God? Why would the phrase "under God" be offensive to them.

The Muslims say there is only one God, that God is Allah and his prophet is Muhammad (spelling?) The Tw** couldn't tell her real reason for dropping the pledge so she made one up!

Muslims have no problem with saying "One Nation Under God". It's the atheists she was pandering to. She's just to freaking STUPID to know to whom she was pandering. I hope she gets fired. Not that she will.

Of course, I now feel sorry for everyone at that school who has to sit through the ceremonies, because I'm pretty sure I know the elementary-oriented, sing-along musical version of the Preamble they're referring to. And...it's terrible.

I don't understand how folks want to pander to EVERY SINGLE interest group out there that make up the citizenry of the United States. When one travels outside the country, one obeys THEIR laws, one RESPECTS their culture, one DOESN'T EXPECT them to speak English in THEIR country.

Now I understand there is a movement out there to make the United States the United World. However, we do have our own culture, we have our own language and we have our own Constitution. Many other nations have emulated us in one way or the other. Freedoms granted under the Constitution do not abrogate our responsibilities to protect what is ours. We didn't become the greatest country in the history of the world trying to accommodate every single nut out there who for some reason or another is 'offended'. They are free to be offended, and if you don't like it, go somewhere where you aren't offended.

Gosh I hate this politically correct b.s. Trying to please everyone, you please nobody.

How much have Americans invested in the Gulf War or Global War on Terrorism? We don't have Victory Gardens. Women aren't giving up nylons for parachutes. Lauren is obsessing over her next Coach bag, what is she giving up?

Different kind of war, it's not nation vs nation anymore. It's ideology vs ideology now, and we're all so tolerant now (unless you're tagged as a neo-con, then you're the equivalent of mentally-challenged moron). So just what are we fighting? Other than the socialists teaching our children, or the fifth column that pose as journalists, just who stands up for America?

POWs have less rights than enemy combatants. Folks who kill 3,000 Americans have a right to our court system. Politicians who represent those with extremely large pocketbooks, not even born here, are now dominating the political scene. There is no American unity, all thrown away in the name of power. When a Marine, accuses another Marine of war crimes without any proof or information more than the average American has for purely political gain, it's time to bail. Marx won. Murtha makes me puke. As I said to another Colonel who was a relative, "You are a disgrace".

Personaly I believe any citizen who doesn't want to Pledge Allegiance to America, should be given a ride out of the country. If you dont have allegiance to this country go to one where you will be happier, but no they will hang around and suck up all the goodies this country has to offer and talk about their freedom to not say the Pledge.

Eff em. Fire this principal and hire an American.

Don't forget our CinC told us to go about our everyday business.

Agreed on all counts, but that's not what we were persuaded of as the reason to go into Iraq. There's not much argument out there that by so doing, we've actually created a vicious cycle with no end in sight.

Oh, and the neo-con thing is hanging out there like a pinata! If anything, that's (neo-con mindset) contributing to the problem, not the solution.

So just what are we fighting? Other than the socialists teaching our children, or the fifth column that pose as journalists, just who stands up for America?

The better question is, what do we do about it (alternately, what CAN we do about it)?

No argument with any of that. At the risk of sounding like one of the neo-cons, I don't see a lot of hope, short of a revolution.

Isn't that what Britan said after colonists told them to shove it?

at any rate, I don't care what some stupid principal does. Sorry if the constitution isn't as cool as the pledge.

you do know the under god part wasn't added until 59 years later right?

just curious.

everyone is up in arms over a stupid addition the KoC put in because they have the same hard on a lot of folks seem to have about having to insert god into everything.

anyways, I just moved my old fridge and I'm tired and still have to move a million boxes, so I'll once over some other threads and get to work.

later, my fellow Americans!

Screw offending the Muslims, and I'd like to :smack: that dumbazz principal right upside her head. We are so afraid of offending anyone we are flushing our patriotic traditions, values and our country right down the toilet. Why don't we just give the country to the Muslims and the illegal immigrants and be done with it. Why do we let one person dictate things like this in our schools to our children? I really don't understand. I'm sick and tired of people making these decisions for everyone in the name of being effing politically correct and non offensive. :banghead:
