We are 11 weeks pregnant and have been looking around for doulas in the Southern Maryland area. Has anyone used one or have any recommendations? Thanks for your help!

I don't know of any doulas but there is a Birth Assistant who lives in Charlotte Hall (she will be coming to my house for our home birth in the next month or so). She charges $700 but mostly because she asists our midwife with the birth.

You may want to call the lactation consultant at St Mary's, she may know of some doulas in the area. Good Luck! Maryland isn't the "friendliest" state for natural childbirth.

I just searched the other day, using a doula database..I couldn't find one closer than Towson or baltimore! There is a DC area birthing center...but they only travel so far...

Oh how I wish that I had read this a few months ago! We moved here in December when I was 7 months pregnant. I was so busy with my other kids and getting ready to move that I never looked into birthing options. Maryland is so behind in providing alternative pregnancy and birth care! I could not believe that there is not a single midwife who has hospital privilages. I went to a Dr. that was supposed to be supportive of natural child birth and found him to be well, less than supportive. He didn't strap me down and force medication on me but he also didn't have much faith that I could do it on my own. There are no doulas around here that I could find, but I would be happy to be a labor coach for anyone who wants a third party to be present during labor. Women of southern Maryland!!! Hear this!!! You CAN have natural birth!!! You are strong and capable of making the right choice for you and your baby.

curiosity. I had just seen a documentary on women who say they orgasm during child birth...they touted all kinds of stuff..water births, doulas, chicken blood...what have you. So out of pure curiosity I looked it up. I checked int he forums to see if anyone had posted on them..and lo and behold.

A hippie mid wife.

I guess some are, but ours definitely wasn't. She was a mother of 8, and seemed about as conservative as they come. She simply knew that most births can be handled by the mother, as long as there are no medical complications.

I wish I could help, but the person we used moved to W. Virginia a couple years ago.

What love is all about
I wish I could have found a midwife during my last two pregnancies. I had one with my first and she was a big help. However my doctor that I have had with my last two has been willing enough to let me labor naturally. He knows all too well that I can do it.

Orgasm? We poop and pee during childbirth, whether in water, in stirrups, with a doula or with chicken blood.

Having a baby is like having the biggest and best poop ever. I guess that could be described as orgasmic. :killingme

I did not read thru all of the posts but I saw a pamphlet at my midwives appt the other day for one. I believe they were based out of Calvert but would travel to St Mary's or Charles. I will see if I can find the info.
