Having bedside manner while delivering babies is usually a plus.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I've known very few women that didn't care about bedside manner when it came to childbirth, and if they thought so initially they changed their minds later on

But everyone is different and requires different amounts of hand holding

I had Dr. Tilley. He wasn't Mr. Personality, but he was competent as far as my experience goes. That to me is much more important than a friendly bedside manner. He actually was much more personable during and after the delivery i thought than he had been during my prenatal visits. I would go to him again.

Any thoughts or opinions on him and his staff? Looking into making my first OB appointment with his office. I know that folks love Dr. Polko and her office, but I would like to stick with one doctor throughout my pregnancy.

Thanks!

Dr. Tilley has over 30 years of experience. Being a solo practice means you can get appointment quicker and be assured that he will deliver your child. I know of 5 women off the top of my head that he has delivered in recent years and they have nothing but good things to say about him, especially during delivery. They said he very competent, was patient, relaxed and thorough. The office staff keeps a sense of humor and their Facebook page reflects that ! I don't think you could go wrong with making an appointment at his office.

So happy!
I've been going to Dr Neal for the last 13 years and have 3 children with her practice and have never had a problem. Dr Kwadike delivered my first two and Dr Neal my last. I had some minor complications with all of my pregnancies and she always took her time with me. WhenI had my last kid ( dec of 2011) Dr Tilley was Dr Neal's on call Dr eveyother weekend. I ended up with him after the delivery and I really liked him.

Love Dr. Tilley's office. I never have to wait more than 5 minutes when I'm there. I see Michelle and she is wonderful, very good bedside manor. I used to go to Dr. Polko's office and saw Dr. Shonekan... I began seeing her when I was 17 and I was very nervous about my first time at the GYN... she was very rude and did nothing to help me feel comfortable. I would not recommend her to anyone! Plus their office was always packed.

I really liked Dr. Shonekan and did not find her the slightest bit rude. And as far as their office being packed, there's a reason for that. They're good. Oh and they have multiple doctors there. The only times that I had a long wait there were because I was waiting to see Dr. Polko and she was playing catcher at the hospital. In those cases, I certainly do not mind.

Late to the party here, but I'll toss my $0.02 anyway!

I had rotten luck with Polko's office. I have a medical condition, so I'm considered "high risk" and Polko bullied me every single time I went in. I switched to Dr. Tilley in my 3rd trimester. He's a great guy. The wait times in his office were absolutely fantastic, I had no issue getting appointment times that worked with my schedule, and I absolutely adore his staff. I didn't have any issue with his bedside manner, he's not exactly the type of guy I would feel comfortable hugging and crying it out with, but that's not really what I look for in a medical professional. I definitely found him to be competent, he was happy to work with my other doctors (who help manage my medical condition) rather than insisting he be my sole provider. He was patient with all of my questions and always made sure he fully answered them without making me feel like I was wasting his time, which was a big issue I had at Polko's practice.

He does trade off on-call weekends with other OBs, which I think most of the single doctor practices in the area do.

In the event we ever decide to go for #3 I would definitely go back to him.

Just curious, how did Dr. Polko bully you? I was high risk and she was nothing but wonderful to me through 2 pregnancies.

She would just repeatedly tell me horror stories about how pregnancies went horribly wrong with people with my condition. I'm diabetic, I was seeing a specialist who helped me manage medication so everything was VERY well controlled. Polko would tell me how I was going to have a 15lb baby, how it would probably have major birth defects, talked about scheduling a c-section at my FIRST APPOINTMENT. They had me come in to their office every.single.week from 6 weeks until I switched practices plus the regular visits up to Annapolis to see the high risk doctors. I'd sit in their waiting room for 30+ minutes and have a 5 minute appointment. I liked Shonekan the best there, but she had good days and bad days. Davis was a jerk, any time my husband came to my appointments with me he'd try to get him to join him making fun of me (mocking mood swings, cravings, etc., stuff I generally didn't have a problem with). Polko bullied. I didn't feel comfortable asking questions, they always made me feel rushed and like I was wasting their time. It just wasn't a good fit. I know most people absolutely love that office, which was why I initially went there, but I just did not have a good experience at all.

I think it may have been that I wasn't letting her manage my medication. I did at first, but it became such a huge nightmare that I had to stop. My specialist (who I trust more than three doctors in a different type of practice) would say one thing, then Davis would say another, Shonekan would say something different and then Polko had another opinion. I told her I was happy to share all documentation, but from that point on only my endocrinologist would be monitoring my medications. Things went downhill from there.

I am sorry you had such a stinky experience and I am glad you found somewhere that you felt comfortable. I understand the feeling of being bullied by a Dr. and it is not fun. Shonekan gave me a hard time about how many children I had and I felt she was pressuring me to have an abortion because I already had too many. It was devastating to be treated that way and I felt like a tattle tale telling on her but felt I needed to. Luckily I never had another problem with the practice. I am considered high risk also (grand multi para) and it is rarely mentioned but I am just monitored more closely but then again I am a midwife patient now. I love the midwife practice and am excited to get to be working with them again :0)

I love Dr Tilley. I would never go to another ob/gyn. I have heard many say he has no bedside manner..I thought it was fine. But when it comes down to it he takes care of business and that's all that should matter... The health of your baby.

Ideally one shouldn't have to choose between the two :ohwell:

Ummmmm ....
I ended up making an appointment with Dr. Polko's office. I wanted to go in, see how things were and have an appointment or two to see if I'd like it there. I decided to go with midwife care and I'm so glad that I did. This is my first pregnancy so I want care that's going to be a little more fluffy and I want my hand held a little. I love the midwives, love them.
