Hi Me and my husband were talking about getting dsl and he was wondering if the telephone company charges you at all for using their lines to use the dsl? He doesnt want to have to rely on using the phone lines anymore for phone calls and wants to use cell phones instead. And who is the best for dsl and cheaest? Thanks for any help.Oh and we live in Calvert county

Verizon is most likely the ONLY provider for your area. Call them and get the facts. DSL is not available in all areas and their web site might not be up to date.

I am fairly sure you have to have a landline to get the dsl. Not sure, because I have to have a landline anyway and I have dsl. I would call them and ask to make sure. I absolutely love my dsl service, I have only had one outage in the 5 or 6 yrs. of service! :howdy:

You can go to thier website and put in your phone number to see if it's available. I'm near Ridge and was surprised to get it...

A quick way to check and see if your line is DSL capable is on the front page of chesapeake.net. Just enter your phone number.

This is from Verizon website. FAQ's:

Do I have to have Verizon local phone service to get Verizon High Speed Internet?
Depending on your location, you may be able to order Verizon High Speed Internet even if you do not have Verizon local phone service. There are several benefits to converting to Verizon High Speed Internet without local service. You can find out right now if this option is available to you by checking your address.

Yes you have to have a land line to get DSL. It is mixed in with your normal phone service and the modem attached to your computer splits out what it needs. I hated my DSL. You can not use wireless with it cause DSL is not strong enough and it is slower than cable internet. Go with only cell phones and see if you can get cable internet form some one. I know comcast does cable internet. Good Luck

 I have Verizon DSL and it's wireless. No problems here! From what I have seen with my girlfriend's service through Comcast it bogs down at certain times at night and it's out of service a lot! She switched to DSL when she moved! But it's your choice.

Slower? I beg to differ but thats a conversation for another day.....but anyway you can get DSL without having a normal pots line/landline. Verizon offers and please don't laugh but it's called "Naked DSL" which is basically DSL without the local Dial Tone.

Your landline is already at the house whether you have service or not. They can offer you DSL without the local phone service. Just call then they can qualify you on your address.

That is not true.
It is mixed in with your normal phone service and the modem attached to your computer splits out what it needs.
Is that bad?

Maybe you were out of range and they shouldn't of sold it to you.

Wrong again. There are two laptops here that operate anywhere in the house and driveway.
and it is slower than cable internet.
At this time, I am alternating between Comcast cable and Verizon DSL and cannot tell the difference in speed for my particular useage.

Verizon DSL is $27 cheaper for me.
Good Luck

I live in Calvert and have Verizon DSL. I've got no complaints. No bogdown and I have yet to lose it for any reason.
