DSLR Question

Methodically disorganized
When I was looking for my current camera, I was suprised at how many cameras no longer have view finders.
Not so surprising when you consider how lazy so many [young] folks are today. If only they considered how much quicker they tear through batteries doing it that way.

High Octane
Nothing wrong with that camera ,very competitive to the Nikons in that class, the only reason I have a nikon now is that I had a nikon before and wanted to use the lenses and attachments. Lenses for canons are easy to find, Think about a trip to Penn camera in Tysons Corner and ask if you can try a couple models.

Im certain the Penn Camera in Laurel or Springfield would be a little closer. :buddies:

Like some have suggested, go somewhere and look at them. I had it narrowed down between Nikon and Cannon. Both had almost the same features and were about the same price. The Cannon just wasn't comfortable in my hands, the Nikon won out. A friend was the opposite, she thought the Cannon felt better.

So true. I got a DSLR camera that you have to use the viewfinder to take the pictures. The LCD screen is only for reviewing pictures after you take them. It definitely changes the way you take a picture and how they turn out.

If you want to look at the Nikon line of DSLRs, here are a few setups you could look at. I found these prices on B&H Photo and Adorama.com

The D80 is being discontinued, but is still a great DSLR. The D90 the new and improved replacement for the D80.

The first three options are with the kits lens and a medium grade 70-300 lens. These lenses are 3.5-5.6 and 4-5.6 aperture, which would limit you in lower light situations.

D90 w/ 18-105mm and 70-300mm 4-5.6 $1749

D80 w/18-135mm and 70-300mm VR $1349

D80 w/18-55 VR $700
+ 70-300mm $500 Total $1250

This setup would not include a normal walk around type lens like the 18-55, but would cover the situations you are after.
D80 Body $550 With 60mm Macro $400
80-200mm F2.8 $900
Teleconverter 1.7X $360
Total $2210
(To replace this with the D90 body only the price goes up to $879 and total would then be $2539)

This would cover most everything you would want to ever do.
D80 w/ 18-55mm $700
60mm Macro $400
80-200mm $900
Teleconverter 1.7X $360
Total $2360

(Again to replace the D80 and 18-55 kit with the D90 and 18-105 VR Kit. Price would go up from $700 to $1139 and total would jump up to $2799)

Hope this helps some.

Be VERY careful if you buy online.

There is one company out there that does business under 10 - 15 different names, I believe they are out of NYC. They have the best prices you'll find, but if you look at the reports and customer surveys from third party sites, they get like a .2 (not a TWO but a 2/10) out of a score of 1 - 10.

LOT of horror stories out there like getting your camera, and it doesn't have the viewfinder (that costs extra) or the LCD screen (Also an extra cost).

About 90% of the online camera sites are out of New York. If you stick with B&H Photo, and Adorama as I did in this pricing, you won't have to worry about getting screwed over. If I do standard shipping from B&H and place my order by 10am it is usually here the next afternoon. B&H, Adorama, Amazon, Beach Camera, and J&R are all good to deal with.

A lot of the scam places advertise at cheaper prices, but once you order they call and tell you that what you have ordered doesn't come with this item or that item and get you to buy things that come with the camera anyway. This brings the price up over what a good company sales it for anyway, and if you don't buy enough stuff for them to make their money, they just cancel your order.

If you wear glasses a viewfinder is a problem because my eye is not as close as it could be and i think the picture does not cover as much area. The screen is a God send for someone who wears glasses and cant #### without them.

They make eye pieces for DSLRs for people that wear glasses. Using the eye piece produces better pictures in a lot of cases do to less shaking holding the camera up to your face.

:yeahthat: Plus, if he does buy a DSLR he may have to use the viewfinder anyway because [older] DSLRs don't use the screen for composing like P&Ss do. Newer cameras are including Live View, though; like my Canon 40D and the 50D, although I'm not sure what Nikons do. The 40D recently dropped below $1K.

I spoke with Danzig the other day and he got me looking into this D90. I like that thing. Even has some limited video capability. Sounds like something that could come in handy once in a while if something popped up when I don't have a video camera handy.

Thanks for the price workup. I haven't had much time to do research the past coule of days. Things should settle down now for the next 2-3 and I hope to make some progress. But, at this point the D90 is what I am looking at.

I got the D90 and I love it. The video is 24 fps and it look really good! If you can swing the $$ go for it! The D90 also has the Live View that HVP mentioned.

Swinging the cash is doable. Just have to convince myself this is the way I wanna go on it. It's a bit more than I am comfortable with so I'll sit tight on any decisions and research the heck out of it for a bit.

But chances are I will end up talking myself into it.

I just can't stand to use optical view finders. Anything where I need a shutter time longer than 1/30 I use something to hold the camera still and use the time delay feature.

Finally starting to pick up the pieces for this project. Today I bought:

Nikon D90 12.3 Megapixel Digital SLR Camera with AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens

Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor Telephoto Auto Focus Lens

I guess in the next couple of days I need to go for the:
80-200mm $900
Teleconverter 1.7X $360

So for the 80-200mm, Is this the right one to look at?
1986 Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED AF Zoom-Nikkor Lens with Bracket & Case - with 5 Year U.S.A. Warranty
