Economy/Job Search Update

Hi everyone,

I've been posting updates on the job search for a while. I'm still searching for a position and coming up on one year of searching, 800+ resumes.

If you are hiring, or know someone that is, and you want to take a look at my resume, I'll send it over to you. Alternatively, I have no problem posting the bulk of it on this thread if anyone is interested in seeing it. I have extensive experience with non-profits and office/program administration and also have great experience in the field of project management and communications. I have a BS in Communications and I am working on my BS in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management and Marketing. Seeking a position in project or program administration, but willing to discuss office management and assistant positions as well.

Thanks for allowing me to get the word out!

Are you looking on here in the classifieds? Also try careerbuilder.com and Pax River's website they should have a job link for civilian employment.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip, but I've looked everywhere. SOMD classifieds, careerbuilder, usajobs, craigslist, monster, company specific websites, all of the other govnt websites, linkedin .. just to name a few of the big ones.

What I have learned, I believe, is that the most likely reason I'm not getting a call is because I don't know anyone. I read an article on msnbc that said 80% of today's jobs are on the closed market, meaning you have to know someone. Since I'm so new to the area, I don't know anyone. So, I also make sure to post in forums like these in hopes of opening up the lines of networking or in hopes of someone reading this that may be willing to take a look at my resume for a position that they know of.

You're not getting a call to interview because you are not wanted for the positions you apply for. You just have to be patient and push through it! Good luck!

Got a clearance? That makes a big difference around here.

edit: Don't feel obligated to say if you do.

Thank you! I would typically agree with that statement, but I think there are so many job searchers out there that very few resumes actually get read and a majority of the ones that do are because someone has recommended them.

I was just offered a position with a company where I knew no one. Not a single person. In fact, I got a call w/in 2 minutes of submitting my resume.

If they want you, they'll contact you.

:yeahthat:

Same here. Granted, the job market isn't what it used to be, but there are still plenty of jobs out there. You just have to find one you are qualified for and be within their salary range, even if it means accepting less $$. You should tailor your cover letters and have a pro look at your resume, as that is often a determining factor whether you get another look or go into the round file. Rule of thumb is, you need to send out at least a hundred resumes to get even one job offer. Go to as many job fairs as possible and meet people and circulate your resume. Keep trying and good luck!

I don't agree w/ the 'who you know'. My resume was pulled several times in the last 6 mos w/ two job offers. I had no inside source. Get input from someone who's in the specific job market you are targeting. They can help translate your experience into some of the buzz words that will get your resume pulled. Good luck!

I have to agree, the buzz words for a particular job are important when a company searches there input resume data base. I used the St Mary's technology hand book, it list every company down here from A-Z. I sent a resume to everyone of them whether they had a position for me or not, I got plenty of calls, never stepped foot in one office and all electronically sent. I tried to get in the government on base for years now and I am learning to get in the government you really have to know someone 80% of the time. I have never gotten a call using the government DOHNR web site, I am starting to find the web site useless. Be open to neighboring states for possible jobs. If worse came to worse I am not to proud to flip a burger or a be WalMart Greetor for a while. St. Mary's County Tech Handbook If worst comes to worst, grow some 36Cs :yahoo:, that will help for sure.

Are you getting interviews or no response at all. If you are not getting any response from all those efforts then it is likely that you're not doing something right. I work pre-screening candidates and evaluating the job application packets and have done this for the past six years. The biggest mistakes people make are (besides typos) not tailoring their resume for the position, applying for positions they aren't qualified for (at least at first glance because they have not tailored their resume for the job description), and not following the directions on the forms. I would like to take a look at your resume if you don't mind because it's hard to imagine someone with the level of exposure and effort you're putting in not getting some responses in this area even in this market. You can copy and paste it FAQ | Unemployed Help

You could also check out that link that someone posted to the msnbc article about revamping your search. Most of the doomed job application packets I see are almost certainly coming from people who think they've done everything right and it must be some other reason why they aren't getting results. But it isn't.
