Electric Bill

I got rid of my hot tub, that thing was horrible on electric, every time we ran it, the bill jumped about 200 bucks a month but we only ran it from maybe Dec to Feb. If I ever get another hot tub it will be one of those little portable soft tubs, they don't use as much electric as a big giant one.

Really??? My hot tub added maybe $35-40 in the dead of winter. Ran it almost all year long, only turned it off like July-August.

I'm talking about a 1980 something Cal Spa, huge 8 person thing. It's gone, thank goodness, I gave it away on craigslist.

The beauty of it was that under it was an in-ground hot tub, that's turning into a Koi pond by the end of October. Deck is being refinished the first week of September and I have friends coming down from MD to do a Koi pond building party.

Our electric bill went up about $30-$40 a month after we moved into the house. Pretty bad a 1 bedroom 700 sqft apartment ran about $140-$150 a month. The house runs about $180-$190, and it's 3 times the size.

Electric bill was the same as the previous month. Older home @1600 sq feet. Central air and a wall unit in the BIG room. $255. I tend to keep it cool in here.

The hot water heater was replaced last year. No difference in the electric bill but the water does get hot faster.

Dakota? You have the pool/hot tub. Doesn't that suck a lot of juice?

Yep and Yep on both but right now the hot tub is powered down- our bill for the last month was $263 and you could hang meat in our house (husband's thing - not mine - I grew up w/no A/C - he didn't). The culprit has to be the hot water heater.... the timing is logical.

If you don't think a jacked up water heater doesn't cause your electic usage to drastically increase, here is proff to show otherwise. I have a 2200 square foot house, running 2 heat pumps, hot tub and a swimming pool.

oops and a family of 4 - 2 teenage boys.

Get rid of the pool! :jet:

 You know... we barely use it anymore - only when we have a party.

The size of the bill really isn't all that bad - well, not now... it was horrible before August.

Are you kidding? I'd faint if i got that bill. Last months was about $60.

My guess was that it was the AC and pool. My last electric bill was $140.00. This month's should be in any day now. It should be lower. We didn't run the AC or heat most of last month.

But who else lives with you?

I have FOUR people here.

Even when I had people here, extra freezer, a/c running, hot tub, etc... I think my worst bill ever was about $250.

I'll bet you can find a bunch of "vampire" stuff that's adding to your bill. Computers and printers plugged in 24/7 (they use power even when off), chargers, TVs, VCRs, etc....

I have lights on timers and infrared sensors so hall lights only turn on when I walk thru and turn off 5-10 seconds after I leave. Master cutoff switch on the TV wall plug so everything REALLY goes off. I've really tried to minimize my electrical footprint.

Yeah... you are right. I know that I could get it down even lower by going around and cutting the power off to those 'vampire' things. Now I feel like this is a challenge...
