Electric Fences?

Anyone have any personal experience with them? The only experience I have had were with a couple of dogs that would break free and come visit.

yes we have one and we love it, we had a dog that ran all the time he was older and didn't follow the fence he ran through as fast as he could but then we got a chocolate lab and trained him as a puppy, he accidently ran through it once and barked to get back in. we have never had a problem since. you have to train them as puppies.

I would NEVER trust one to contain my dogs. We have a physical fence but Abbey sailed over it so Ott and I installed the underground electric fence. Abbey would take a "hit" to go over it if there was something she wanted on the other side. Eventually, she stopped jumping. Although, yesterday when Ott and I were in the front yard with the stray puppy, Abbey jumped the fence to see what the deal was.

Also, it doesn't keep dogs from coming in your yard.

We finally ran the electric fence along the base of a physical fence line. Works like a charm! Alone it never thwarted my Black Lab.

yes, we have one with our three dogs and it is wonderful. It doesn't, however keep other dogs out. Depending on the size of your yard, I would definitely recommend it.....but I recommend having it professionally installed.

Good Point! I think it may be effective on a tiny yard.

The only experience I've had is with the neighborhood dogs on them coming to visit my house. One absolutely, georgous, chocolate lab stud came out regularly with two collars on.

Two other labs would swim the creek and visit quite often. I'm not sure if they didn't have the fence charged or the collars were without batteries.

Labs get excited and charge the fence. Trust me. I have two of them.

Joggers won't be able to tell your dog is contained, and you might almost get punched in the face or cussed at by a passerby.

I had one, my beagle would keep testing it with the beep/vibrate warning until the battery in the collar would die and he was free. Plus, I could never tell when the no-so-cheap CR2 batteries would die. Basically I didn't trust it, and it didn't keep my neighbors pit bulls out of the my yard. I bit the bullit and had a fence installed. I also installed a doggie door, now my pups can go in and out all they please while I'm at work.

They work great for keeping slippery beagles away from slipping out of the real fence after rabbits. I just love the wireless one I have but it was about $300. It can be set at almost any yardage in a circumference, and it has 8 shock settings, the first one is just beeping as a warning. I have experience training 2 dogs to them if you'd like any suggestions. I think most people just slap the collar on and expect it to work but the dogs must be conditioned to the fence over a period of 2 weeks. It is better than no fence but a double fence is better for certain stinkers!

I have one of the wireless radio signal fences that I used with Hunter. It worked GREAT. Buddy has one too. He's very happy with it. Nice thing is that the collar doesn't shock just when you go over the line. It keeps shocking every couple seconds until the dog returns to the proper area. One time, and only one time, Hunter crossed the line and he only made it 5-10 yards at full run before turning around and running back to the no-shock area.

Since I no longer have a dog, it's up for sale.

It's all about training. I know people who curse the invisible fence for not working but spent more time on installation instead of training.

Another item of interest is to upgrade to the stubborn dog receiver. It takes a 9v battery and delivers much more discipline than the CR2 powered models.

I know of an incident where a jogger got hit by a car because he didn't know the dogs coming at him were contained (if that's what you wanna' call it). He ran in front of a vehicle because he thought the dogs were going to attack him.
