Emergency Farrier Needed?

Ugh - I literally feel your pain! My boy did the same thing the first week of July. Flakey farrier took off and left me and all clients in the dust....what was I to do? Said farrier further butchered his sore feet by slapping on shoes that were to small before he skipped town- when my boy should have been left to heal (no hoof to put a shoe to). So 3 absesses and severe bruising, a visit from Dr. Mende and a new very incredible farrier later....we are back and sound. But my equine soap opera went on for about 7 weeks! NOT FUN! But I'm happy he is sound now and we're hoping to be out and about for the fall shows! His first set of shoes only lasted 4 weeks - he still doesn't have a lot of hoof, but it is growing. Dr. Mende likes the way his feet are being treated and we should be in the clear....

Moral of my story is - severe hoof injuries take time to heal. I hope your boy is on his way to recovery and you have a excellent farrier to help you. Yes it is true - "no hoof, no horse"! Hope all is well!!

Wow, that sounds about right. Sorry about your farrier troubles... sounds like your new one is a real winner. :) Who is it that you use?

Farrier came out yesterday, really screwed my horses feet over and I'm thoroughly pissed. He cut his front hoof down so much and then told me that if he didn't put a shoe on, his hoof would fall apart and get even more banged up. So needless to say, my horse will probably have a nice abcess by the time I get home tomorrow. UGH.

pack it with icthamol

check your horse's deep digital pulse.. if the pulse on one leg is much stronger than the other chances are you have an abscess building

if you are worried your horse will abscess pack his foot with icthamol.. smells gross but really draws out the heat and reduces the swelling.. then the diaper duct tape vetwrap solution over that..

i spent a year of every 4 weeks at dr mende's.. one word = expensive .. best thing i ever did was pull the damn shoes through on the old mac boots and let his feet grow for 6 weeks.. and dry sawdust in his stall everyday with the boots off b/c the boots hold in moisture from the grass.. plus vitamin supplement and hoof conditioners...

one more tip.. if you need to have your horses feet really clean ..we've used antibacterial soap before applying keretex but i was told to use an onion to avoid putting too much moisture on the hoof
