EVDO anyone

Curious if anyone in Northern St. Marys or sothern Charles use EVDO service?
Also what are your thoughts on the service? reliable? speed? latency?

Currently have direcway/hughesnet and consideruing switching to evdo either through Verizon or Sprint but wanted to see if anyone could provide a opinion. Looking at the coverage maps it appears with Verizon I may be out of the serving area and would resort to there National access at 144kbps. So close to the line of coverage so I wanted to see if anyone else is using it and was able to reach broadband access speeds...Which they said could peak around 2meg....consistently around 700k. Plus the latency is so much better!

Satellite has become very unreliable lately with slowdowns at peak times to about 200-300kbps. Not to mention latency is absolutely horrendous at 800-1000ms.

Looking for some feedback ....Thanks

Using it here in Southern St. Marys. If you have a Verizon Cell phone or know someone have them come to your house and see what the signal is like for the cell phone that will tell you how your signal will be with the card.

I've been using EV-DO for two years this May. I live in Clements (just north of Leonardtown). My understanding is they just upgraded to REV-A. In May I am entitled to a free replacement and will move up to REV-A. Like the previous poster - if you have a fairly new Verizon phone - if you will see EV-DO on the display - you have access. If you have a weak signal - just get pick up an antenna.

Just ran a few tests for ya. I am only running REV-0 (REV-A is much much faster!).

My point with showing all these test results is because they vary so much!

Anyway - I super place for EV-DO (that will answer all your questions) is on:

Hope this helps.

Pookieboo!!!
Our Sprint sales rep said REV A would not be up and running until the middle of this year.

I'm running getting 1 bar at my house, but sometimes I lose connection. I'm still running HughesNet though.

Yes, they make routers for data cards now. Very little configuration is required. :yay:

Like vanbells said - you can use a router. You can also share via your EtherNet card. You can simply run a cable (EtherNet) from the PC running EV-DO to another PC. Naturally, you will have to let your Firewall (on the EV-DO PC) know.

You can also tether an EVDO cell phone to a laptop or desktop..

Well I just ordered since reports are saying that Rev A is now available for my area. Many reports that its in Leonardtown, Clements, LP etc....Anything has got to be better then DWAY! I have a 15 day trial period so if I don't like it I can send it back. Hopefully this will be the end of those miserable days of dealing with slow web pages, terrbile dloads and uploads.....Improved latency is all I'm asking for!

Will report back in a couple of days....If all goes well I will purchase a new router!

Just as an FYI. If you go with verizon watch their Venturi accelerator program. It likes to give me fits with my laptop where I have to turn the service off. It compress the data to speed your throughput but its also a pita sometimes and slows the puter down but hogging resources.

First thing you do is remove the Venturi Accelerator Program. You simply won't need it plus (as mentioned) - it causes problems and screws up any speed tests.

Absolutely no problems. I removed mine two years ago (this May). I removed it after reading other user problems (and they all removed it).

I'm using that exact model and I love it. I just pack it up and go when I need to go anyplace and want to share an internet connection.

Godd I was looking for smomeone who used the linksys. The kyocera doesn't support the VZ PC card I'm getting.

My only concern with linksys will be future firmware upgrades. Linksys appears to be inline with Sprint on this one.......I assume VZ doesn't want you to share there connection therefore are turning there nose up at linksys :lmao:
