Every now and then - the French surprise me

Guedj also suggested that witnesses who failed to act at the time would not risk being pursued for non-assistance to a person in danger, a crime in France.

They can ignore the plight of the people being killed by Saddam, but they have this law on the books. I can see problems with a law like this, but I have to say it does have its merits. Start making people accountable for ignoring the violence around their communities.

It's a shame anybody ever thought there was a need for a law like this.

We see it here, too. People watching the violence go on outside their homes in the bigger cities, and they just close their curtains and ignore it. A lot of places in America consider it better to just mind their own business then try to help someone. Of course, the silly part about this law is proving it. You could claim you were petrified in fear, etc...

In addition, there are times when interfering would just border on the stupid. Such as the time in this case when there is a whole gang with knives. If you are unarmed, you aren't going to do a whole lot no matter what sort of muscle bound, hand-to-hand trained, giant you are.

I can see that. No more Kitty Genoveses.

I don't understand why everythinks the French have a history of cowardice. True, Petain was a power-hungry collaborator, but DeGaulle and the other Free French soldiers kept on fighting.

People who say that crap are just looking for a reason to hate and for something to show how much better they are.

As for laws making it a crime for not rendering assistance or for not reporting another crime, didn't the supreme court say that the police have no obligation to help or protect anyone? If we don't even require the police to help people whose lives are being threatened, how can we require it of the general public?

I believe this case is the basis for the rule that the police are not obligated to protect the public.

If I see a crime, I'm at least going to call 911 and report it. I live in this area, as does my son and I would like a safe enviroment.
