Exercise induced asthma?

Anyone have this? I thought it was a joke, but I am starting to think I may have a problem with this.

I find that when I'm on the elliptical, or jogging...my chest feels like it is caving in. At first..for say 15 min or so I am just fine..then it slowly begins to tighten..and HURT. I know my heart is fine...and thought maybe I just had poor breathing technique..but even focused attention to "in through your nose, out through your mouth" breathing..still left me with the tight chest, swollen feeling throat, and runny nose..I am not sure..because symptoms are kinda vague..but I think it may be more than just being a lil out of shape. Because I feel like my body could go on much longer ( I dont get tired, or sore)..but my chest hurts so bad I cannot go on..

Also, as an aside..anyones face turn purple when they work out? I am fair skinned (ok, casper white) so anything looks really red on me...but I have had people at the gym ask me if I need to go to the hospital..even after only a moderate workout..maybe due to not getting enough oxygen when I run? I will prolly go ask a doc, of course, but I was wondering if anyone else has a prob with this, or a way to fix it:buddies:

You know I love to be a smart ass..

But in this instance.. GO SEE A DOCTOR..

I wouldn't work out again until you get cleared medically.. The stuff you are describing sounds fairly serious, and I wouldn't take a chance.

I have exercise induced asthma. Your symptoms don't sound like that. I begin coughing and wheezing. It sounds like a really bad chest cold.

If your face/lips are turning blue and you are having tightening of the chest, that really sounds like a lack of oxygen and I'd get to a doc ASAP to get that checked. You need to make sure you aren't experiencing any heart pumping issues getting the oxygenated blood back out from your lungs. I would not prolong that visit, and until you see a specialist, I'd advise you to skip the gym. Hate to scare you but it sounds potentially serious to me.

Yes, a doc is order..I may take the mehta suggestion..

I would be more worried about it if I hadn't just got a total and complete physical, ekg and all.

I'd recommend a cardiologist. Dr. Mehta is a pulmonary doc.

Sounds like they need to do a stress test and echo to me.

Don't take this the wrong way..

But how many times have you heard of people getting a "clean bill of health" and dying a few days later from a heart attack?

Or being told.. "it's just gas, go home relax, take some pepto!"

If nothing else, there are a few "ask a nurse" websites, that you can enter your symptoms and they'll tell you the next course of action.. like "CALL 911 and get to the hospital. Do NOT drive yourself!!"

Liberty, with the serious replies you've had here, I'd heed the warnings and get this done quickly.

It's not often a thread stays on track and you get real advice to seek medical attention. There hasn't even been one, "I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night" reply. :faint:

Did they give you a stress test and an echocardiogram? did you mention this to your doctor when you were getting the physical?

My sons have exercise-induced asthma and their symptoms are not very similar to yours, especially the red/purple face, tight chest, swollen-feeling throat and runny nose. Those last three soundmore like some kind of an allergic reaction and are particularly troubling.

In other words, STOP THE EXERCISING and get thee to a doctor about this problem, post-haste!

We like you & want to keep you around for a while!!! :huggy:

no kidding.
Who says you guys are mean?

Anyway, I will make an appt today, even if it is just to be safe. Really though, I do think it is some sort of reaction to the workout..feels almost like when I have an allergic reaction..Im even keyed up afterward. I would think that if it is a heart issue..I would feel fatigue..

Get to a doctor!!

I've had asthma/chronic bronchitis, etc for over sixty years. Your symptoms don't sound like asthma to me - especially the chest pain. With asthma most of the "pain" comes from straining to breath and is felt in the muscles around the chest and in the back - at least that is my description of it.

While your heart may be fine - you could have serious arterial blockage or problem that doesn't show up until you exert yourself physically.

ever hear of a 16 year old athlete dropping dead? It happens.

So you are 22. Could be something you were born with. Or it could be nothing. Not a chance you should take.

:nono: age is not a factor in what you're describing. I've had exercise induced asthma since highschool. Its nothing like the symptoms you described.

In My Opinion
I was 38 when I had my heart attack.

kinda felt the same as you are describing.

Im just saying,,,,,

Whats gonna make you feel dumber.
Going in and not having heart problems
not going in and ending up with your young behind in the ER with a heart attack.
