Engine, front suspension and steering, clutch cable system...it's been a slog but she's headed to first comp event in a couple weeks.

Season opener in Greer, SC. We broke an axle coming off the line....but what a great time we had anyway. We were pitted next to the legendary Gene Cromer and his immaculately restored "Moonlighter" (the blue Willys in background of attached pic)

Turnout was amazing; they had to close the gate and turn people away after about 12 noon.

Some coverage here: http://www.foxsports.com/motor/story/drag-racing-classic-cars-1965-043016

The story of Gene's racing career and his return to the track is here.

What's the "build plan"?

We're getting started on a second gasser....have not decided whether it's going to be based on a '66 Mustang or a '66 Bronco. Will definitely still be FE-powered.

Bronco gasser, that would be cool to see!

Trust me, the II looks good in pics, but needs a lot of work. My plans are for a new 300ish hp roller 302, mild cam, heads, intake, long tube headers and 4brl carb, T5 trans and upgrade the suspension. Not much love or aftermarket support for the Mustang II's. Want to keep it stock in appearance but be a little pocket rocket. Looking for engines now, I don't really want to build a long block on my own.

Sure are a ton of good options out there for 5.0 crate long blocks...including the stroked versions. Since they're so popular, prices are really good too. The old flathead V-8 and FE stuff I run...not the same story. Some of the vintage performance parts are priced in to the stratosphere these days.

what fe combo you got in the falcon? buddy and myself were putting a 65 falcon with a side oiler/tunnel port
combo together some years ago, until the shop was set on fire.

I don't care how much they are panned by "everyone". I have always liked the look of the II. Old body with modern running gear would be cool.

Yup, I have a soft spot for them. I have a 74 Ghia too (Sorry Gilligan, not trying to highjack your thread)

Sure..make me cry, will ya? I'm hunting a 427 block right now, in fact.

It's a Frankenmotor I put together for the gasser, which is by the rules required to be period correct in most respects. Started with a 361FT HD block and steel crank, with 390 pistons and rods, race balanced, and a "po man's low riser" top end...C6AE-R FE heads with Manley CJ valves and some other work. A 1962 solid lifter track cam..... .520" lift and a whopping 338 degrees duration, Vintage Edelbrock dual AFB intake and a pair of Carters. Vintage Mallory Dual-Life dual-point racing distributor and a Mallory box coil and Hyfire unit to fire it.

What was Boots ever not hard on if it had an engine in it?:lmao:

The heads and rods in the gasser frankenmotor are from the "collection" of FEs that I hauled out of the barn where Nace had 'em stashed away. The 361FT block and crank came off a never-run runway snowblower engine that we bought at a Pax surplus auction.

Not sure if it's the same T-5, but I just took one out of my old S-10. It was rebuilt 300 miles ago (by the Gear Box in Mechanicsville) and it's just sitting now.

If you're looking for one, shoot me a PM.

My dad's got a 390FE laying around his shop. He swears one day he'll get a vehicle to put it in.

I wish he had never sold his '69 F100 w/ the 390. Thing was awesome (minus the lap belts and fuel tank inches from your back).

that's true about boots. did you get a chance to make a run?

We broke an axle on the first pass.. ;-(

Coming back with 31-spline Mosers before next event.

We're starting on a second gasser. This one will based on a '66 Bronco....but still with an FE engine and top loader 4-speed. Not sure what yet..but I have a line on a 427 center-oiler block to start it off.
