Family sues hospital over snakebite death

"LONDON, Ky. --
As a woman bitten by a rattlesnake during a church service in London struggled to breathe, hospital employees made derogatory comments about her religious beliefs rather than providing proper care, contributing to her death, a lawsuit charges.

The case arises from the Nov. 5, 2006, death of Linda F. Long, 48, a London homemaker. Police said at the time that Long was handling a yellow timber rattler during a service at East London Holiness Church when the snake bit her on the right cheek.

People bitten by poisonous snakes during religious services sometimes refuse medical treatment. But others at that service quickly took Long to Marymount Medical Center in London."

If the woman had more faith she wouldn't have been bitten in the first place.

One of my favorite stories

The little boy was walking down a path and he came across a rattlesnake. The rattlesnake was getting old. He asked, "Please little boy, can you take me to the top of the mountain? I hope to see the sunset one last time before I die." The little boy answered "No Mr. Rattlesnake. If I pick you up, you'll bite me and I'll die." The rattlesnake said, "No, I promise. I won't bite you. Just please take me up to the mountain." The little boy thought about it and finally picked up that rattlesnake and took it close to his chest and carried it up to the top of the mountain.

They sat there and watched the sunset together. It was so beautiful. Then after sunset the rattlesnake turned to the little boy and asked, "Can I go home now? I am tired, and I am old." The little boy picked up the rattlesnake and again took it to his chest and held it tightly and safely. He came all the way down the mountain holding the snake carefully and took it to his home to give him some food and a place to sleep. The next day the rattlesnake turned to the boy and asked, "Please little boy, will you take me back to my home now? It is time for me to leave this world, and I would like to be at my home now." The little boy felt he had been safe all this time and the snake had kept his word, so he would take it home as asked.

He carefully picked up the snake, took it close to his chest, and carried him back to the woods, to his home to die. Just before he laid the rattlesnake down, the rattlesnake turned and bit him in the chest. The little boy cried out and threw the snake upon the ground. "Mr. Snake, why did you do that? Now I will surely die!" The rattlesnake looked up at him and grinned, "You knew what I was when you picked me up."

people actually do this?!

wow.

I had heard of them more in rural areas in the Southeast. My Uncle had this comedy album where the guy recalls an encounter with one of those churches- I think he played it just about every time we were down there (Boondocks of TN).

OK, she's a moron for handling poisionous snakes. I can't believe this "church" wouldn't have some anti-venom around, surely they aren't surprised when someone gets bit. This part here though makes me hope they win their lawsuit:

After being taken into the hospital at 8:09 p.m., Long said she was having trouble breathing, and asked for oxygen. Hospital employees gave her a portable, oscillating fan as they allegedly "snickered and made derogatory comments" to employees -- and Long's family -- about the religious beliefs and circumstances under which she was bitten.

Her blood pressure dropped; her heart rate went up; her neck, face and tongue swelled; and she went into shock. However, a doctor failed to properly treat her and did not put in a tube to help her breathe, according to the lawsuit.

At 8:28 p.m., hospital personnel contacted the air ambulance service. When the helicopter arrived 12 minutes later, the crew asked the doctor to put in a tube to help Long breathe, but the doctor said her airway was not the problem and told the flight crew to get her to Lexington quickly, the suit says.

Long's heart stopped on the way. She was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m. at the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

A lot of people show up hurt at the hospital from doing stupid crap, they deserve professional treatment though. If it was my mom unable to breath and they pointed a freakin' FAN at her they would have had to pry me off whoever was in charge.

the thing is this...

there are always two sides to the story.

sure, this COULD all be true, BUT she could have also been refusing to take any real treatment. you don't know...

i thought it was pretty funny too hearing that this religion had any base in the UK. I mean, they have rural places out there too, but it just seemed funny lol.

That would be London Kentuky not England. Nowhere in the story did it say she refused treatment in any case. Why would the family be suing if they had denied actual medical care? They claim "The hospital failed to adhere to proper standards of care" If you deny medicine you can hardly make that claim.

Is her playing with snakes and getting bit as a religious event any more ridiculous than the Jehovahs Witness who refused a blood transfusion?

They both ended up on a slab.

Nope, both actions show just how warped religion can make your thinking. The difference however is that the snakebit chowderhead actively sought out medical care while the new mother refused it and bled to death thereby ensuring her sweet new babies would forever be denied a loving mother.
