Fans outraged: Lynyrd Skynyrd denounces Confederate flag

One Nation Under God
Lynyrd Skynyrd, which only contains one original member, has been using giant Confederate flags as concert backdrops for 30 years. The band has certainly never cared about being politically correct. The most famous song by the band, Sweet Home Alabama, praises former Governor and presidential candidate George Wallace. Today, Wallace is vilified by the left for defending racial segregation.

The Confederate flag became closely associated with rock n roll in part because of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Other famous rock acts continued to use the Confederate flag in concert through the 80s and 90s such include Guns N Roses, Pantera, and Kid Rock. Even Sean Taro Ono Lennon has been seen wearing a Confederate flag t-shirt.

Now the band has suddenly decided to become politically correct. Gary Rossington, the only original member, grovelled to CNN's Fredricka Whitfield. He says he doesn't want to offend anyone by using the Confederate flag. He said the band will no longer display the flag.

I read a book on Skynard. The rebel flag was the record company's idea, and was not embraced by the band, but tolerated as being part of the show. The reference to George Wallace in Sweet Home Alabama was actually a dig. Read the lyrics.

This was discussed by the band several years ago. It's only being noticed now because of all this hoopla. Sweet Home Alabama did not PRAISE Gov. George Wallace. This article is crap.

The point is lyrics and everything else that is sung or spoken can be taken every which way, and loose. It is all about who is doing the interpreting, y'all.

"In Birmingham, they love the Governor..Boo, Boo, Boo" Pretty clear to me LOL

Sweet Home Alabama was written as a response to Neil Young's Southern Man and Alabama. It is not racist in any meaningful way. In fact, it is anti-racist.

Yeah, that has already been discussed. But, remember that members/people will read anything into anything that makes it work for their agenda. :yay:

No big deal if people are unhappy with Skynard they can quit buying the music.

It's just that simple.

That's right, if idiot bigots want to b upset that skynard not using that symbol anymore they should stop buying the music.
Resisting the urge to bob their heads and air guitar to 'gimme back my bullets' is probably asking too much :killingme

Your point?

Point is that people have been mis-interpreting rock lyrics for a long time, and "Sweet Home Alabama" is no different.

Reagan used Springsteen's "Born in the USA" like a patriotic anthem because of the refrain. It was actually about the shabby way Vietnam vets were treated.
