I did it twice a month from 78 to 91
17 was almost always faster.
there were times when you could go 30 or so mile and not see another car.

yeah but back then there were only about 5 cars on the road.

Going through grafton etc on 17 is a pain in the azz.

I go 301to
I295
I64

I have been doing it 2-3 times a month for 8 years (got an '04 with 80K because of it!). The real answer is, it depends. Time of day, day of the week, time of the year. I never use 95 in the summer. Too much traffic. I also try to get to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel before 2PM or after 7PM as it is almost always backed up. 17 is shorter by ~18 miles, faster in the summer. They have also raised the speed limit between Port Royal (Horne's) and Gloucester County line to 60 in most areas. 64MPH is safe.

I have made that trip atleast 150 times and I hate 95 any given day or time:jameo:

I very seldom do the HRBT because I am usually going to chesapeake. so its the JRBT/ M/M bridge

In My Opinion
I used 17 to go to Va Beach on the last holiday weekend, I did not hit one bit of traffic.
the normal slowdowns in the towns, but no traffic until I got to the bridge coming home.

I've been either on the back of a bike or in my car since Thrustday. Got myself a nice alcohol induced tail pipe burn on my calf before I even left town:dork:

I opted for Route 17 becuase I hate driving so fast I can't see the road signs and dodging retards and schrapnel(sic) on the highway. I made it to the opera house with ten minutes to spare to change my clothes in the back of my car and brush out my hair. It was a lovely ballet:dork:

Drove through the smokey haze and dust clouds through North Carolina got back to the beach looking like a raccoon:lol:

My buttock are literally bruised from the narrow seat and I have a farmer's tan. :ohwell: At least now I have more riding time in this year than my 11 year old does now:yahoo:

wana stop for a cold one:alkies:

Is that the Williamport exit?. We came through there at 8:54 pm and stopped for burgers at the Wendy's at the next exit. Once we got back on 70, DE asked me which exit was yours.

Anyhow after sitting at a complete stop on the beltway for over an hour, we finally arrived home at 12:50 am. Of course this was after our stop for refreshments at Tony Baden's. :buddies:

Thank gawd I took tomorrow off .

Pookieboo!!!
Everytime I come home from VA Beach by using 95, I always get stuck in traffic or 1+ hours. I never learn to take 17 back home.
