Fat hawk down

We all know that feeling - a large lunch leaves us sprawled out on the sofa.

Similarly, this juvenile red-tailed hawk was rendered immobile after scoffing down another bird.

Photographer Steve Shinn managed to snap the stricken bird of prey on its back after a meal of a coot near a nature preserve in Long Beach, California.

'I shot this just after a big holiday meal and think I could feel this bird's pain,' he explained.

'I found this bird in a very unhawklike position looking very distressed. It had attacked a Coot near the stream and chewed away on it for about a half hour before it waddled about 50 feet and fell flat on his keister.
Sometimes we're too serious here. Something to lighten up your day.

Strung Out
FWIW;

Hawks have to get it right the first time. When they dive on their prey and strike, they can't let go if it happens to be too heavy so, they crash.

Also, they eat their catch live. They don't kill it first. So, our boy here probably had quite the struggle with this meal and earned the break which, as often as not, could get him killed.

I love to watch the hawk population in my woods. They are awesome creatures, and I love to hear their calls; it is like the ultimate sound of nature, and so pure. Sorry, I get carried away. :smile: I just hope that "fat hawk" woke up from his gorging stupor. I guess, we will never know. It is a very funny pic. Thanks for the moment of humor. :lol:
