I'll bet the guy in the mustang tried to close the gap the honda was trying to move into.

I see it about 50/50 closing the gap and suddenly realizing they need to get over and cutting people off. Since this was an out of town driver, could have been caught by surprise and cut him off.

Hmmm.. so striking another car while changing lanes.. crossing over into oncoming traffic...

Damn those slick roads..

I would agree.. South of the Rec Center it becomes a Right Turn only lane..

Speed, wet roads, texting, everyone coming up with a cause. Here is another one to ponder. Has anyone thought maybe the driver had a MEDICAL issue. Maybe a heart attack, diabetic issues, those things happen and when they do, the driver has no control of the vehicle what so ever.

That is not relevant to this accident. It looks like they either made an unsafe lane change, or someone did a PIC move on them. The wet roads and speed took it from a simple fender bender to an out of control slide.

There's no reason to suspect a medical condition had anything to do with it. Your guess is just not supported by any facts.

I'll bet a camera at that location would have prevented the accident, you know, one of those cameras in the name of safety...

Correct.

I saw the wrecked vehicles and spoke to eye witnesses. There is no way that everyone was doing 45 mph with good traction on the road.
The guy I spoke with saw the black car go airborne and flip 3 times before
hitting the truck and then a light pole.

Eyewitnesses suck, generally speaking. To flip three times in the air would require a silly initial velocity. Rolling three times, maybe, but not flipping three times in the air I'm not buying.

You say rolling I say flipping... flipping rolling... rolling flipping. Seriously, I think we all get the idea that it topsy-turveyed... wouldn'tcha say?

You are desperate ! Which ever one happened, it happened while airborne.
Don't really care if you 'buy it' ! :killingme

Not desperate, just doubting that the car had enough energy to spin or flip three times while airborne. Doesn't matter if you care or not, physics are what they are. And eyewitnesses are not the best sources.

What does it matter? We can play Monday morning quarterback all we want, but the fact remains, one person is dead for clipping another car while trying to make a lane change.

What can we learn for this?
A lot!

Obey the speed limit.
Use your turn signals!
Slow down in congested areas.
Let people merge no matter how stupid they may be.
Drive defensively!!
Keep an eye on the road at all times and at least 5-7 cars ahead of you and to your left and right!

Take a look at the photos of the cars involved, including the red mustang.

Perhaps a last minute lane change, clipped the Mustang and had no chance against the truck!

Also, lets not forget that no lane is worth your life. If you think you are in the wrong lane, and you cant safely get in the right one, ride it out, come back at it from the other direction.

We all see people take extreme measures to get into a lane. And nothing we do will change those people. What we can do is talk about this with the people we know and might have some influence over, that it's so much better to go that extra distance and get turned around. Very few exits are one way with no way back on.

FireBrand, thanks for posting the info. Agree, no one down that way approaching the bridge is doing 45 even on a wet day. Most of the idiot drivers have some kind of NASCAR hangup and are adamant not to let one car get in front of them.

More often than not though, it's the 'I've got a bumber's distance on ya; I'm comin' over, whether you want me to or not' mentality. That combined with failure to signal lane change most likely contributed.
Another factor in these kinds of accidents is; very few people don't use mirrors or check blind spots. With regard to posted speed limits; to many it's just a suggestion.
