segments to divert outrage from the real obscenity, the war.

Bill O'Reilly is sort of FOX's preacher, or the father figure who scolds and punishes the wayward, appealing to the viewers who yearn for the "Father Knows Best" days of yore when minorities knew their place, women stayed home in servitude, kids were seen and not heard, and a man's home was his castle. Yes, those were the days - if you weren't a minority, a woman, or a kid. Hence O'Reilly's popularity among older white males who blame their lost stature on teevee even as they're glued to it."

Funny how things were so much smoother back then. Did Beaver or Wally ever want to take an Uzi to school and mow down the shop class? Did June have to go once a month to stand in line for her WIC vouchers? Did you have anyone in your neighborhood put up a sign for kids to stay away during holloween? How many dead kids did they have to take off the highways every week? Teen pregnancy rates were lower, there were no daycare centers in high schools, you could go shopping after dark downtown.

You are right, that era sucked ass.

Think again. Teen pregnancy rates were higher in the 1950s.

How does this qualify as news "lefty"... First off, just because it is written on the internet does not make it news... Secondly and more importantly, the fact that you posted on here absolutely means it is not news... Just more senseless drivel from a lefty who wants to HUG trees and anyone associated with CNN, NBC, MSNBC and CBS... I bet Wolf Blitzer is your hero...

Think again. Teen pregnancy rates were higher in the 1950s

The first reason is the dramatic increase in out-of-wedlock teen births. Although the rate of teen births has decreased since the 1950s, the percent of teen births which occurred outside of marriage increased from 15% in 1960 to 75% in 1995.

Did you read the whole report?

Women typically married right out of high school back then, and then they proceeded to have children with their husband.

Uh, ever hear of a shotgun wedding? They very often did not plan the pregnancy even if they did eventually get married. A lot of failed or bad marriages resulted from this practice. The divorce rate coincidentally skyrocketted from the early 1960s on. A Treatise on the Family - Google Book Search
The teen pregnancy rate was way higher back then, so it would be a stretch to claim most or even a god portion were "planned" and/or the pregnancies occured after marriage.

Teenagers got down and nasty back in the fifties too, it wasn't all Ozzie and Harriet. 1950s TV was just fiction and provided the illusion of a better more clean living time. The only good thing about the fifties is that violent crime was not as prevalent (though child abuse and rapes often went unreported), but maybe the failed marriages from the shotgun weddings led to disfunctional families and that generation raised people who were more likely to be criminals as a result. The Ozzie and Harriet generation raised the kids that went on to be the criminals among the worst crime ridden time in our nation's history (the mid 80s to early 90s).

I blame this on the devil music called rock and roll. It made the kids immoral and more likey to commit sins. If only times were like back in the 1930s when kids were raised properly and they listened to proper music, weren't exposed to smut on TV (June Cleaver wore some tight dresses exposing her figure and she wore one of them new fangled bra thingies.....the slut! ).
Oh wait, the kids of the 20s and 30s were listenning to the evil and immoral jazz and swing while watching smut in silent movies. That Valentino probably caused more teenage girls to become wayward mothers than any man in history (....that man slut!). If only kids were raised like they were back in the Victorian times when people lived properly and they weren't exposed to smutty movies and immoral film.
Oh wait, the kids were exposed to sexually suggestive Vaudville and ragtime music....that damn Scott Choplin and his sex dance inducing piano melodies has cause more spread of the clap than any other musician in history. If only the kids were raised back in.........etc.

My mother had me when she was 19 - a little over a year AFTER she got married to my Dad. Obviously not a shotgun wedding. And I'm sure most of us know many women who married in their teens, and not because they were pregnant. It was rather common back then to marry right out of high school.

So now you're just conjecturing to bolster the fact that you didn't read the whole report, and just cherry-picked what you thought would support your argument.

hmmm...

ok. Well, I got married while I was pregnant at the age of 18. But I was engaged before I was pregnant. Still wrong? probably. BUT. I didn't get married for that reason. I think that ya'll are missing the point of what was trying to be said...no, everything wasn't perfect then, but things were a hell of a lot better than they are now!

I cherry picked nothing. Yes I recognise it was more accepted back then to get married young and it often happened especially in the rural areas where half the country were wtill living, but it is desperate to try and dismiss the incredibly higher number of teen pregnancies as being planned marriages. I mean get real, the numbers are so high that at the very least if one were to remove planned marriages one would still have to admit unplanned teen pregnancy was as high if not higher then.

The teen pregnancy rate for 15-19 year olds in teh 1950s was almost 100 per 1000 women. In 2003 it was 41 per 1000 women. Less than half the teen pregnancy of back then. Sure, most of the pregnant teen women in the fifties got married, but it is preposterous to claim or think they were all planned or happenned after the marriage. The teenagers were screwing out of wedlock back then too. Just as many or more unplanned pregnancies that happened to unmarried teen women occured then as now, the only difference is the culture eventually allowed the man (boy really) to get away with not being made to, or expected to marry the woman.

I disagree, the time we live in now is screwed up, but it is way better than it was in the early 90s when society seemed to be going down the crapper with the social ills and comparing us to the fifties it seems like we have it just as good as they did. The biggest difference is now both parents have to work and back then one parent was a stay at home parent that could raise the kids full time. We are more affluent than then, but we also had to make sacrifces to be so.

To me it just seems that parents are there for their kids less and less. This is why i say things were better then. You still had screwed up in the head parents, but it didn't seem as though there were so many of them.

Moral relativism, it's not so much they are there for the kids less and less it is they are more likely to accept poor behavior because relatively speaking it is not as bad as others behavior.

Hello?

There wasn't such a high divorce rate, and there were more father's living with their children instead of sending a monthly check or abandoning them outright. There was very little aborticide. Radio people weren't spanking lesbians on the air. We were not aware of any Presidents getting bjs from interns.

The list goes on and on and you can't possibly compare the two eras.

I suspect you are a very young person - no older than 30. Am I right?
