Fence-Eating Dog

Our dog (beagle) eats through our wooden fence rails. Over time, he gnaws and gnaws at the same spot until he makes a hole large enough to escape. We're seriously considering replacing the fence w/vinyl (not just b/c of him, but b/c the previous homeowner put up the wooden fence and it is shoddy) and wonder if the dog will be able to chew through it?

If you all say yes, I'll still probably replace the fence, but I'll add a shock collar to my order and shock his tri-colored hide when I see him going for a snack! :lmao:

Forgot I'd posted that. We gave up on the idea of trying to contain him with an electric fence. I'm really wondering now if a dog can chew through a vinyl fence post?

I would think so. Can you fasten chicken wire along the bottom, say 3', of the fence?

:fixed:

A beagle will find a way to run rabbits. It's a survival instinct. We had a beagle mix that would climb a wire fence to roam.

What about training him w/a shock collar? I can get my neighbor to let her dogs out as 'bait' to tempt him into trying to chew??

I've also heard that spreading tabasco sauce a few times will cure him.

He really focuses only on the one area that he can see the road where other dogs are walking.

Emmy just wants to chase them. :killingme I think the future DH trained his lab with a shock collar and he's very well behaved. Maybe give it a try.

If you want to try one of the wireless electronic fences, you are welcome to borrow mine until you decide if you want to buy. Don't have the dog anymore. It's a 5lb. coffee can sized transmitter that goes inside and transmits a signal from 5'-80' (10'-160' circle) where the dog can roam at will. Go outside the circle and get correction. Worked like a CHARM with Hunter.
