I'm envisioning an adapter tube for a point and shoot to mount filter on. What camera do you refer to

Well, when I tried to use the macro lens without the tube on the D40 it wouldn't allow the lens to move. I will check again to make sure I am not thinking of my point and shoot.

Yeah, point and shoots need an ext. tube to get the filter out farther. THis allows the point and shoot to zoom in and out and not hit the filter. You can also add telephoto extenders and macro adapters to point and shoots this way.

SLR's you just screw the correct size filter to the front of the lens or as Deadeye said, some have an internal slot to drop them in.

Look on the back of the lens cap (that goes onto the front of your lens) it should say what size it is, then buy filters that are the same size. The filter size depends on the lens you are using, not the camera.

Depends on the size of your lens. Look just inside the outer rim of the lens and it will tell you the size. 52mm, 72,, etc. This is not the same as the focal length. Ie 70-300 mm or what ever. If you see a 52mm on your 55-200 then thats the size you need.

Yes the nikon 55-200mm lenses use 52mm filters. the 52mm is diameter for the threads on the front of the lens.

Yep I checked it!! Thanks Guys!

Extension tubes work better than closeup filters. IMO~ try a 12mm or so for starters.
You can get closer with any lens and larger image. They make a great combination with a 50mm non zoom.

I had never looked at ebay for camera stuff before.. found all kinds of cheap stuff. But I figure if it's that cheap it can't be that good. I found a fisheye lens for $39.99. It is something you add to the lens you already have.

Yep you get what ya pay for in glass. Good glass costs! The extension tubes are just that an empty tube , no glass so cheepie is ok. Often you loose auto focus though.

:yeahthat: I loved the extension tube on my Nikonos. One of these days I'll get those slides converted to digital....

I have a set of 52mm close up filters, they work okay IMO. Never tried extension tube, so I cant speak for their results. You can try my filters if you want, they too came from eBAY.

Thanks but I really really really don't like to be reasponsible for other people's stuff

I did go out today and bought a Neutral Density Filter today... now I just gotta try it out :)
