Filthiest city

NYC gets a bad rap - it wasn't that bad. Easily the filthiest city I've ever been to is New Orleans. Twice, and both times it struck me as disgusting. Even pre-Katrina.

Which is not to say I wouldn't go there again, but it was truly gross.

What say you?

Los Angeles made me feel dirty. It wasn't that there was more trash or anything laying around than anywhere else - but when I was there, EVERYTHING (cars, buildings, trees, people) felt like it was just sheathed in a layer of soot and dirt and crud.

Also the people there made me sick. Just nasty nasty ####ing people in L.A.

Karachi, Pakistan followed closely by Mombasa, Kenya. People pooping in the streets, dead animals all over,............

When you gotta go, you gotta go.

I'm not a world traveller or nothing, so I can't vouch for the veracity of this or anything, but I've heard that Moracco holds the title for that sort of thing.

Apropos of nothing: A lot of the Halo Trilogy (video game) is set in Mombasa. (New Mombasa, actually), and it is the epitome of cleanliness and what you would think of as a futuristic super-city.

At least, until it gets destroyed.

Thankfully, I have no intention of visiting any of these places.

Except maybe the 'clean' ones bcp mentioned, so thanks for the positive reviews. :yay:

Surprised no one has yet mentioned MD's own Baltimore; may not be #1 nastiest, but surely up there.

Nawlins takes a bad rap due to the sheer nature of Bourbon St - sure it smells like urine and has trash strewn about - but that is what happens when you put 100s of bars on one street and invite the entire region to party every night. I found the rest of Nawlins to be fairly clean for a city of its size.

True about Bourbon St causing the bad rap. But the rest of the city isnt much better IMO... the smell of mold is everywhere. Literally EVERYWHERE. Its also so damned hot and muggy that Bourbon Street's smell just radiates everywhere - at least all the way down to the French Market and casino area. Now once you get to the "rich" part - the area with the old plantation mansions, etc - its not too bad. That area was actually rather nice IMO.

I just think its gross that when leaving a bar at 2:30am you come across city workers who are dumping 5-gal buckets of pure bleach onto the street and sidewalk and scrubbing like crazy. When one asks said workers why they're doing what they're doing and they reply "Could you imagine what it would smell like if we didnt do this every night?," it dosnt exactly give you a warm and fuzzy feeling inside :lmao:

I loved Harrah's!!! Spend 30 mins in casino ganbling (with player's card) and get free parking (which is a premium in that part of town)...so, wife and I plunk down 50 bucks a piece in the 25 cent slots and walk out 30 minutes later with almost 400 in our pockets.

They paid me to park there!!!!

Dang, good job :yay:

I would have loved it, too. If I weren't underage at the time I was there and could actually gamble  I used a friend of a friend's liscense to get in, but I didnt dare gamble because knowing my luck, I'd actually win something. They'd check my ID again, etc. and realize it wasnt me.

Then Id be in trouble and broke

I have to say that in the U.S., hands down the filthiest city I have been to lately is Detroit. Not only filthy. but decrepit and decaying.

I have to agree...in the US Detroit is the worst that I've been to in the last 3 years...in that time frame i've also been to N.O. and I thought the Rock City was way worse...abandon 20+ level office buildings....crazy...

Washington D.C.

Topp you are being crazy.....DC is one of the cleaner cities in the country especially since they put in the new stadium.

I have never been Port-Au-Prince before the earthquake but it is now hands down the nastiest place I have ever been. And I have been to some real nasty places in Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Yeah....Africa is the worst I've seen.....and some villages in Aghan as well...you have to watch out for the poo.....people poo that is...

why so serious
I think NY is absolutely disgusting. It stinks like urine and unbathed masses.
I've been to Chicago many times and didn't think it was that bad.

I haven't been there in a long time. If you stick to the business and tourist areas wasn't bad at all. But it just takes a wrong turn and two blocks later :twitch:

MMDad, you also just described Las Vegas and Atlantic City, wander a few blocks away from the main tourist/business areas and you are in no mans land. In most tourist hotspot locations if you wander away from the main tourist hotspot locations you can be in deep do do. I have seen some really strange things even in Orlando just outside the House of the Mouse and Universal areas.

In the world: Karachi, Pakistan followed closely by Mombasa, Kenya. People pooping in the streets, dead animals all over,............ I have to stop now, I just threw up in my mouth a little thinking about those places.

Karachi has it's own special odor, doesn't it? But I don't put it into the same class of nasty. It's just a huge third world city, with all of the third world problems.

I said Tijuana because they also have the sewage issues, but the people also have an especially disgusting attitude. Kind of like Nawlins.

Nawlins is nowhere near as dirty as some of the world cities I've been to, but the nastiest of the people combined with the nasty city makes it the worst. Trash heaps just piled up beside the road. Somebody drops trash? Just leave it. It'll degrade in a few centuries. Besides, if the government wants it cleaned up they can damn well do it. They owe me that.

Port au Prince, Haiti narrowly beats out Bombay, India.

Over here SE DC ties with Newark, NJ.
I guess it would depend on the area in Newark for me, but some areas in Newark aren't bad at all. I grew up nearby.

Never been to Port au Prince, but Bombay is the biggest sh#t hole I've ever been to, period. I've heard Calcutta was worse, but never had the "pleasure" to drop in there (fortunately).

This is true. Since Barry has been gone, the city has rebuilt itself and is one of the prettier cities in the world. Just stay away from SE but even there is getting cleaned up slowly.

I had a geography professor who told of an experience visiting New Delhi. I don't recall the details but I do know he said it was terrible. There was an episode of "The Amazing Race" shot there, and they must have agreed with my professor's sentiments because as soon as everyone stepped off the plane, they commented on the stench.

Because all the trash is being swept into P.G. (and beyond).
