Finally broke down

... and upgraded my phone. I've had a dumb flip-phone for-freakin'-ever, and it was great, but things change. Verizon decided to eliminate my corporate discount now that I'm retired (bastages...), I've had an increasing need to text which is tough on a flip-phone and costs $.10 per, and there are a couple of apps I could really use.

Ditched Verizon and went with Straight Talk on a Samsung Galaxy S3. Runs on the Verizon backbone anyway. Cost per month will be less with unlimited text and Internet (up to 2.5Gb). Have to say I'm really impressed with the S3. The voice2text works almost flawlessly.

Porting the old phone number to the new phone was painless and from the time submitted to the time the new phone was active was about 2.5 hours.

I used to put my old flip-phone in my front pocket. Can't do that now, too big.....

GW, I currently still have a flip phone and I would like to upgrade, due to the texting issues. It takes me 10 min. to fumble thru the damn letters and numbers on the current phone (after I find mt glasses). But I do not want to pay for a data package (internet). We currently use Verison Wireless.

What would anybody here recommend?

Look at the offerings from Straight Talk. You can get a dumb phone with texting keyboard for peanuts, and get a $30/mo plan. Smart phones require a $45/mo plan minimum. Or if you find someone with an old phone that works for you , you can use your own phone and just get a $30/mo plan.

Interesting thing too, when my Straight Talk phone powers up, it flashes a TracPhone logo. You might find something in the TracPhone line.

not impressed
If you go tracphone look at the double or triple minute for life phones. Picked one up for my dad that came with 400x3 (1200) minutes for $80. He doesn't talk much so it usually lasts him a 6-9 months.

Can you transfer a phone number to it?

Will Straight Talk or Trackfone let you run a hotspot from their phones. I have a friend with Straight Talk and tried setting his up as a hotspot and it wouldn't work. Said the provider did not allow that function. Just wondering if there was any way to make it work.

This is a great texting phone, data plan not required. I loved it when I had it, but it backfired that is what made me what a smart phone.

Still have my 10 year old flip phone and am still loving it, use it strictly as a phone as in hello can you hear me now. Work in high Tech, and am surrounded by computers all day, and when i get home, am surrounded by computers all night, have a laptop with EVDO, don't see the need to upgrade, all my friends and work know to call me if they need me. If this phone dies, i will just go out to 7/11 and buy a burn phone and pay minutes per month.
Listen to the people in my office and family bitch about something wrong with their new smart phones, i just whip mine out and tell them how much i love my antique phone. JMHO

All you folks new to texting on a smartphone owe it to yourselves to try out swype or one of the other apps like that. Takes a short while to get used to it, then you will rage like an animal if forced to actually type out words.

TOS for Straight Talk expressly prohibits using the phone as a hotspot or as a tether.

I got the same reaction from my family who have been after me for years to get real texting....

Thought about it, but I'm liking the voice2text built in. It hardly ever makes a mistake and a heckofalot faster than swype or hunt/peck.

I do that feature myself a lot. But if you cannot speak in a situation, swype beats hunt&peck.
