Firewood regulations: Care Urged in Buying Firewood - Southern Maryland News

I do not buy firewood because I always feel like I am getting ripped off and not being delivered a full cord. They usually just dump it in a pile and that is it. So I would have to stack it in order to measure to be sure and that does not seem like it could be done by one person in a timely manner. In reading this it sounds like they are supposed to stack it for you. On to my question, Has anyone purchased wood and been happy with their purchase? Did they do the stacking for you? and what company would you recomend.

I didn't get that at all.

The article states that they have to sell it by or by fraction of a cord and what a cord should measure.

Bulk sales of firewood must be accompanied by a delivery ticket containing the date of delivery, the name and address of the seller and buyer, the quantity of wood delivered, the cost of the wood, the type of wood delivered, and the license number or other identifying number of the vehicle that transports the wood.

That means if they say they dropped off a cord, you stack it and it doesn't measure out, then they didn't drop off a cord and you have recourse.

Really comes down to what you want to pay for- just the wood or the wood and the labor to stack it.

who has wood?

Most guys have a stacked price and a dumped price. What I was wondering about is how to know if the wood is "seasoned".

I am sure they would for a price, which increases the cost of the cord. In all my time of buying firewood, i was never sold a short cord.

We got some wood a couple weeks ago. I don't think its that seasoned. Seems to take longer to get going than the last load.

What f*****g difference does it make if I buy it by the cord or by the helicopter lift train-car? This is such a stoopid law and it serves very little purpose! Just another reason to hate living in MD! Ok, I am sure there will be a dozen tree-hugger replies, or those hypocrits that will defend MD, but swivel elsewhere complaining how dumb people are here! Bring 'em on!

Some perspective. Back in the mid 70s, I sold firewood. Lots of firewood, almost all of it wholsale so we didn't make "one cord" deliveries. Bought timeber tops wholesalefrom timber estimators throughout southern MD, areas that are all houses now.

It was a "free-for-all" crazy time ..every Tom or John with a chainsaw and a pickup truck or trailer was cutting and selling firewood. Remember, this was the times after the first big oil crunch and people went crazy over wood burning appliances; it was literally a craze. A cord of firewood sold for nearly as much at the height of the 1970s woodburning craze as a cord sells for now. Big money could be made accordingly.

So the shysters were everywhere, selling green wood, selling misidentified wood, wood advertised as full cords that were anything but..."racks, pickup loads, face cords..yadda yadda". And nearly all of it going to buyers totally "new" and unfamiliar wiuth any of that..really.

So the state stepped in and passed regulations.

End of story.

The same reason you buy gas by the gallon, apples by the pound and eggs by the dozon...There has to be a standard of measurement.

Really, and this is how you measure your firewood consumption? I don't think a fireplace (or stove) cares what amount is being consumed. However, the others do for practical reasons. I never heard of that law until now and I amnot sure how enforcing it would help anything. And the better question is... is this a 2nd degree misdemeanor? I am sure the cell mates would really enjoy that story! only in MD... lol.

Your car cares whether its liters, teaspoons or pints of gasoline? I'm pretty sure not.:killingme

No Gilligan... it doesn't. But do you measure your consumption on those? Well, you prolly don't, but most people might, especially for economical or cooking purposes. Whereas, a fireplace/stove usage doesn't care whether I burn a cord or a forest, now does it? Do you walk around saying you get 500M molecules of heat per cord? lol.

I suppose we could get a few dozen idiot responses on this... but is there any common sense. Think about it (if you're capable). It seems like many things around here (somd)... the locals justify dumb things one way or another cause they don't know no other way, or can't come to terms with reasoning. Another example is the stupidty of having a perfectly full staff of a County Sherriff Dept covering the same area as the State Police. A big waste to me! A typical crime scene down here is a huddle of each to see who is in charge! I've resided or lived in many states in this country and it was astonishing to see it happening here. Folks I know who grew up here give me the deer-in-the-headlights when I bring it up... *shakin head*

weight of the logs is one way, unseasoned wood is heavy. Another is to look and see if the outside of the logs is oxidized, they should look weathered. You can also take two pieces and bang them together, if they sound like a baseball bat its seasoned, if it is a more dull thud its not. Basically, you have to know what you are looking for and have a feel for it.

So Mo..you didn't explain how MD's locals are different from all the locals in the rest of the states in the country, nearly all of which that are regions where firewood is sold have firewood sales regulations. Did you know that some states even require that wood be sold/delivered with certificates of volume, condition, source and pest-free status?

No..clearly you did not.

This has nothing to do with consumption.. This is about purchasing.
Who are the "others" that do care.??

We are discussing the unit of measure for purchase. :howdy:

Cut and split your own; then you are exempt.:killingme

Yes, I realize that thar Mr. Gilligan. Try a little comprehension of what I am pointing out. I can LEGALLY buy eggs, fuel and most anything however I want to! Yes there is a standard of measure, but that is being practical. But is there a f. law that says I can't buy 500 pounds of fuel? Or 16 bushels of eggs? It is a senseless law and like some famous actor has quoted for many years, laws should be made for everyone! Senseless laws that have a limited scope should be against the law! And I agree with Mr. Eastwood!
